PMG — medium-speed permanent magnet generator for wind turbines up to 10 MW
PMG is a medium-speed synchronous permanent magnet generator for wind turbines of up to 10 MW with a speed of 100–600 rpm. It works with a single- or two-stage gearbox and a full-power converter. It is installed on onshore and offshore wind turbines and on tidal power installations.

Description
PMG medium-speed generators from the manufacturer work paired with a single- or two-stage gearbox. This arrangement combines the strengths of direct-drive and high-speed drivetrains. The mass and dimensions of the machine are moderate, and there are fewer gearbox stages than in a classic high-speed design. Fewer stages mean fewer components that can fail, so drivetrain availability is high. The arrangement is chosen when a compromise is needed between the mass of a direct-drive generator and the number of stages of a classic high-speed gearbox. The rated range of the line reaches 10 MW at speeds from 100 to 600 rpm.
The rotor field is created by permanent magnets. There is no external excitation source, no slip rings and no brush gear, so losses are lower, the design is simpler and there are few wearing parts. According to the manufacturer, the efficiency of the machine remains high across the whole range of wind speeds, including at partial loads. This directly increases annual energy production (AEP). Each generator is designed for a specific turbine and its operating conditions, and the components are arranged so that they are simple to service and failures are less frequent.
The generator is connected to the grid through a full-power converter. Together they meet grid code requirements for fault ride-through and provide 100 % reactive power compensation. The converter fully decouples the generator speed from the grid frequency, so the turbine runs at variable speed. The company was one of the first to fit PMGs with full-power converters, first to offshore and then to onshore wind turbines. According to the company, by 2021 more than 600 medium-speed PMGs had been supplied for offshore turbines.
The references include a medium-speed PMG for the flagship 8 MW turbine of a Danish manufacturer. For the Atlantis AR1500 tidal turbine the company supplied an integrated medium-speed generator. The same line includes the FusionDrive module, where the generator and gearbox share a frame and bearings and the gearbox lubricant cools the generator. Generators and drives are tested at full power at the Large Drive Test Center in Lappeenranta, which is rated for machines up to 18 MW.
The main areas of application are onshore and offshore megawatt-class wind turbines, tidal power installations, and drivetrain modernization of wind turbines.

Questions and answers
What power and speed does the medium-speed PMG have?
The line is rated for power up to 10 MW at a speed of 100–600 rpm. The design of each machine is adapted to the specific turbine.
What gearbox does the generator work with?
A single- or two-stage gearbox. For the most compact variant there is the FusionDrive module, where the generator and gearbox share a frame and bearings.
Does a wind turbine with this generator meet grid code requirements?
Yes, paired with a full-power converter the wind turbine rides through voltage dips and provides 100 % reactive power compensation.
