PM (PM-A / PM-W) — permanent magnet synchronous generator for wind turbines up to 20 MW
A series of permanent magnet excited synchronous generators for geared wind turbines rated up to 20 MW. The generator works with a full-power converter, so it has a wide speed control range and connects to the grid easily. The modular series covers low-voltage and medium-voltage versions with air or water cooling.

Description
According to the manufacturer, thousands of such machines operate in wind power around the world. The generator is part of a full-power converter concept, meaning that all the power passes to the grid through the converter. Speed is controlled within wide limits, so the turbine runs at an optimal point at different wind speeds. This gives higher energy yield and simple frequency control on the grid side at 50 or 60 Hz.
The main advantage of permanent magnets is the absence of an electrical excitation system. Maintenance is lower and efficiency higher, so total energy yield is also greater. The design is built for high mechanical strength. The magnets are fully protected against corrosion and resistant to short circuits. Convenient access is provided for maintenance, and spare parts are easy to obtain.
On the manufacturer's website the series is stated as up to 20 MW with a shaft height of 450–1000 mm and modular air/air or air/water cooling. The generator catalogue lists two basic versions. PM-A has modular air/air cooling and a shaft height of 400–1000 mm. PM-W is cooled by an air/water scheme or through a water jacket, with a shaft height from 400 to over 1000 mm. The catalogue versions PM-A and PM-W cover ratings up to 10 MW, and a 3.3 MW generator is shown there as an example. Other shaft heights, ratings and cooling methods are agreed by the manufacturer for the project.
The insulation is protected against moisture and the windings are vibration-resistant. Versions for cold and hot climates and anti-corrosion coatings for offshore sites with a salty atmosphere are available. Temperature sensors are standard, and vibration and leakage sensors are an option. Insulated bearings are designed for the whole service life of the turbine and are replaced easily in the nacelle. The second shaft end is provided for speed sensors, and low-noise versions are available. The generators meet the requirements of classification societies, international standards for wind turbines and grid requirements, and each undergoes 100 % inspection before shipment.
The generators are installed on onshore and offshore wind turbines, including medium-speed drivetrains. The series forms the basis of the generator part of the HybridDrive drivetrain. Replacement generators for existing turbines are also supplied. The modularity of the series means that the basic generator is adapted to a specific turbine type by selecting the voltage class, cooling method and shaft height.

Questions and answers
What power do the PM generators have?
The series is stated as up to 20 MW. The basic catalogue versions PM-A and PM-W cover ratings up to 10 MW, and other variants are agreed by the manufacturer for the project.
Which cooling options are available?
PM-A has modular air/air cooling, PM-W is cooled by an air/water scheme or through a water jacket. Shaft height is 400–1000 mm, and over 1000 mm for PM-W.
How does the generator connect to the grid?
All the power passes through a full-power converter, which matches the generator to a 50 or 60 Hz grid and gives a wide speed control range.
