Synchronous generators for diesel and gas engines, medium and high voltage, up to 20 MW and 15 kV

Made-to-order medium and high voltage synchronous generators up to 20 MW and 15 000 V for diesel and gas engine drives. They serve as standby units and as the main source of continuous power, at stationary and mobile installations. The generators are produced at the plant in Mankato, Minnesota, USA.

Description

The generators have class H insulation with a temperature rise within class H, F or B. Cooling is open drip-proof (ODP), with an air-to-water heat exchanger (CACW) or air-to-air heat exchanger (CACA). Sleeve or rolling bearings are used, the machines are built to the main international standards, and accessories are selected for each project. After the 2011 expansion the plant produces generators up to 25 MW. This item covers machines above 1 kV; low voltage generators for the same purpose are not included.

The generator is brushless, with a rotating field. The laminated stator core of electrical steel is clamped by rings and tie bars in a steel frame, the winding is made of insulated coils, and the whole stator is impregnated with resin under vacuum and pressure (VPI). The salient-pole rotor has a damper winding of copper or aluminium bars and is also VPI impregnated. The shaft carries the exciter armature with a rotating rectifier and the rotor of the permanent magnet pilot exciter (PMG). The enclosure is drip-proof, with filters, with an air-to-air (TEAAC) or air-to-water (TEWAC) heat exchanger, in the Weather Protected II version, with IP22–IP54 protection and sealed windings. Machines come in single or double bearing designs, with air discharge at the drive end or from the centre section.

Since the 1980s a special insulation system for medium and high voltage has been used for the oil and gas sector. Formed stator coils have mica tape turn insulation, which withstands impulse overvoltages almost twice as well as wire with glass insulation. The windings comply with IEEE 522 and IEC 60034-15. The copper damper winding is designed for non-linear loads, and the bearing on the non-drive side is insulated. Such generators work on offshore and onshore platforms, FPSOs, refineries, LNG terminals, gas pipeline compressor stations and vessels; marine versions are certified by classification societies.

For excitation control the manufacturer supplies the KCR 360/760, K65-12B and K125-10B voltage regulators, parallel operation modules and the KRM2000 rotor monitoring system. Extended insulation tests are carried out to IEEE 432-1992. The generators are installed at diesel and gas generating stations, in cogeneration, at peak-load plants, at oil and gas facilities and in ship power plants.
