Motor-generator sets for transformer test stations up to 40 MVA
A motor-generator set consists of a special generator and a squirrel-cage induction motor on a common base frame. The generators are built for ratings up to 40 MVA for large transformers and up to 5000 kVA for medium-power transformers. The sets supply transformer test stations.

Description
Motor-generator sets serve as the power source at transformer test stations. A set consists of a special generator and a squirrel-cage induction motor joined by a flexible coupling. Both machines are mounted on a common base frame.
Over the last decade the manufacturer has built sets in two power classes. Special generators rated up to 40 MVA are intended for stations that test large power transformers, and generators up to 5000 kVA for stations that test medium-power transformers. One of the sets operates at a transformer test station in Croatia. The 2025 catalogue classes motor-generators for test stations as special synchronous generators.
After the company stopped producing turbogenerators for power plants in 2010, it continues to build turbogenerators for test stations. The generators for the sets are made at the plant in Zagreb on the same equipment as hydrogenerators. This covers stator lamination punching or laser cutting, winding manufacture and impregnation, machining, balancing and assembly. Electromagnetic, ventilation and thermal calculations are performed with the company's own software. The design department, about 80 engineers, prepares the technical documentation to the requirements of the specific project and customer. Approval documentation comes first, then, after approval, the working documentation from which procurement and manufacture of components start, and after installation, commissioning and trial operation the as-built documentation.
Quality control accompanies the whole process, from incoming inspection of materials and components to final electrical tests. The rated voltage and speed of the sets are not given in the manufacturer's materials; they are set by the requirements of the test station. A set is selected where a power source independent of the grid with adjustable parameters is needed.
The operating principle is simple. The motor turns the generator through a flexible coupling, and the generator supplies the transformer under test with voltage of the required parameters. The station therefore does not depend on the voltage quality of the external grid, and the generator rating is chosen for the class of transformers being tested. The sets are used at transformer test stations, including the station in Croatia where one of them is already in service.

Questions and answers
What is the rating of the generators in the set?
For large transformers the generators are built for up to 40 MVA, and for medium-power transformers for up to 5000 kVA.
What does a motor-generator set consist of?
It consists of a special generator and a squirrel-cage induction motor. The machines are joined by a flexible coupling and mounted on a common base frame.
Are turbogenerators for test stations made?
Yes, although the company stopped producing turbogenerators for power plants in 2010. The documentation is prepared by a design department of about 80 engineers.
