IG — squirrel-cage induction generator for wind turbines up to 10 MW
A series of squirrel-cage induction generators for geared wind turbines rated up to 10 MW. There are no brushes or slip rings, so the machine is compact and light at high power and needs little maintenance. The generator is connected to the grid through a full-power converter rated at 100 % of power.

Description
A simple mechanical and electrical design gives a durable machine with low losses, and the service intervals in the series are extended. According to the manufacturer, the design and technical solutions of the generator have exactly the properties that wind power requires.
The full-power converter completely decouples the generator from the grid, so the machine works over a wide speed range. Normal grid fluctuations affect neither the generator nor the whole wind turbine drivetrain. The turbine can be adjusted precisely to the current wind, which has a positive effect on annual energy yield. The generators are built for 50 Hz, 60 Hz or 50/60 Hz, so one turbine type can be used in different markets without reworking the electrical part.
The catalogue lists three versions. IG-A with modular air/air cooling has a shaft height from 400 to over 1000 mm and a rating up to 10 MW. IG-W is cooled by an air/water scheme or through a water jacket, shaft height 400–800 mm, rating up to 10 MW. IG-F with pole changing and a finned frame has a shaft height of 355–500 mm and a rating up to 1.25 MW. Open IP34 cooling is also possible. The shaft height determines the size of the machine and thus the space that must be provided for it in the nacelle. The manufacturer stresses that the list shows only the most common sizes, and shaft heights, ratings and cooling methods are selected for the project.
The insulation is moisture-proof and the windings are vibration-resistant. Versions for cold and hot climates and anti-corrosion paint systems for marine conditions are provided. Temperature sensors are standard, and vibration and leakage sensors are an option. Insulated bearings are designed for the whole service life of the turbine and are replaced right in the nacelle without removing the generator. The second shaft end can carry a tachogenerator or encoder, and low-noise variants are available.
Before shipment each generator undergoes a full check on the plant's test benches. The generators work on onshore and offshore wind turbines in all climatic zones, including harsh conditions. They are supplied for new turbines and as replacement generators on existing turbines.

Questions and answers
Does the IG generator require brush maintenance?
No, the generator has no brushes or slip rings. The rotor is squirrel-cage, and the service intervals in the series are extended.
How does the IG generator work with the grid?
The generator is connected through a full-power converter rated at 100 % of power, so it is fully decoupled from the grid. Versions for 50 Hz, 60 Hz and 50/60 Hz are available.
What shaft height do the versions of the series have?
IG-A has a shaft height from 400 to over 1000 mm, IG-W 400–800 mm, IG-F 355–500 mm. The first two versions are rated up to 10 MW, IG-F up to 1.25 MW.
