Description
Hydrogen as a cooling medium reduces friction and ventilation losses, which raises the output and efficiency of the machine. The generators are built in two variants, with and without direct water cooling of the stator winding, and the model is selected to match the turbine requirements. At 50 Hz the machine rotates at 3000 rpm, at 60 Hz at 3600 rpm. The cooling method is IC 8 (H1) W7, hydrogen pressure is 4–7 bar and the power factor is 0.8–0.9. Insulation is class F, the degree of protection is IP55 according to IEC 60034-5, and the mounting arrangements are IM7305, IM7306, IM1105 and IM1106.
Working with hydrogen requires dedicated auxiliary systems, and the generator is supplied together with them. They prepare and circulate the water and hydrogen that cool the machine and supply oil to the shaft seals. The gas system monitors the cooling medium in all modes, maintains the required hydrogen pressure and purges and fills the casing with hydrogen or air through inert CO2 gas. The shaft seals are oil seals, with oil flowing into the gap between the shaft and the sealing rings. The seal oil unit supplies it at the required temperature, pressure and cleanliness.
The design complies with the PED directive for pressure equipment and with ATEX, because the machine operates in the presence of hydrogen. During stacking the stator core is periodically pressed and finally consolidated at the end, so that individual laminations do not loosen in service. A large generator needs fast excitation, so a static system is used here that quickly adjusts the magnetic flux in the gap to the load. It keeps operation in the grid stable and the generator voltage constant at no load and during plant servicing.
The design has proved robust and repairable in service, and the technology is developed by the company's own R&D. Design work uses three-dimensional finite element analysis of mechanics, electromagnetic processes and ventilation. Each generator is adapted to the customer's specification and the requirements of the particular project. Installation is possible indoors or outdoors, with soundproof walls or enclosures. Since 1950 more than 170 such machines with a total rating above 30 GVA have been ordered, of which more than 38 are for open-cycle and combined-cycle gas turbines.
