Description
Hydrogenerators are synchronous machines for hydroelectric power plants of all types, including run-of-river, dam-toe and high-head diversion plants. The manufacturer supplies them for any speed range, in vertical and horizontal designs, for fixed and variable speed operation, with air or water cooling of the windings. The generator is designed for a specific unit together with the turbine: the full-scope supplier takes into account the moment of inertia, runaway speed, water hammer and grid stability. In total, more than 40 000 hydro units (turbines and generators) have been supplied.
Structurally it is a salient-pole machine with a laminated stator core and a bar winding. The bars and coils are made using vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI) with insulation based on mica tape and epoxy compound, and the system meets thermal class 155 per IEC (class F per IEEE). Rated voltages up to 25 kV are part of the standard programme. During design, the required moment of inertia is built in for power system stability and better LVRT performance, together with a margin between the first critical speed and the runaway speed, and permissible mechanical stresses in the rotating parts. In air-cooled machines the core has an increased diameter and reduced length for uniform heat removal.
The output range runs from single MVA to hundreds of MVA. The manufacturer has built fully air-cooled generators of 855.6 MVA for the Xi Luo Du hydro plant (125 rpm) and 944.5 MVA for the Wu Dong De hydro plant (90.9 rpm), machines of 823.6 MVA for Itaipu and 840 MVA for Three Gorges, as well as air-cooled generators of 805 MVA for Guri II. Typical deliveries include generators of 190 MVA / 100 rpm, 122.1 MVA / 375 rpm, 532 MVA / 112.5 rpm, 145.2 MVA / 600 rpm and 117 MVA / 69.23 rpm. Excitation is static thyristor or brushless (HyCon Thyricon line).
Alongside new machines, the manufacturer carries out stator rewinding, rotor replacement and modernization. At the Bath County pumped storage plant the output of the motor-generators rose from 389 to 530 MVA after replacement of windings and rotors. Applications cover large and medium hydro plants, multipurpose hydro schemes and reconstruction of existing stations.
