Description
Hydropower is the main line of the enterprise, which was founded in 1958 in Deyang as a hydropower equipment plant. There is a national hydraulic laboratory, test benches for model testing of turbines and thrust bearings, and its own calculation and design centre. Hydrogenerators are made for all types of hydro units that the manufacturer produces: Francis (10–1000 MW), Kaplan (up to 190–200 MW), bulb (up to 75–80 MW), Pelton (12–150 MW) and reversible pumped-storage units (10–450 MW). Calculation and design are carried out in one centre, and model tests of turbines are run on the company’s own benches.
A hydrogenerator is normally supplied as part of a hydro unit together with the turbine, the excitation system and auxiliary systems. Cooling is by air, water or evaporation, depending on power and rotational speed. The generator is built for a specific unit, so the final parameters are set in the hydropower plant project. Unit power, rotational speed and cooling type are chosen according to the turbine type and the plant head. For the underground Three Gorges plant, 700 MW units with evaporative cooling of the stator winding were supplied. This technology was developed in China and removes the need for water cooling of the bars.
The largest machines, 1000 MW hydro units for the Baihetan plant, have the highest unit power in the world. All eight units of the left bank were made here, and the first ones were commissioned in 2021. For the Xiluodu plant, 770 MW units were supplied in 2013–2014. In total, more than 500 Francis hydro units have been supplied, of which 86 have a unit power of 500 MW and more. There are also units for the Gibe III plant (Ethiopia, 10 units), Lower Sesan II (Cambodia) and Jirau (Brazil). Deliveries cover hydropower plants in China, Africa, Asia and South America.
A synchronous condenser mode with water depression from the runner chamber by compressed air is offered separately, and it has been implemented at the Mardang plant. Modernisation and uprating of existing generators are also carried out, and intelligent diagnostic systems are supplied. Production is located in Deyang (Sichuan province, China), and the annual capacity of the enterprise for all types of power generation equipment is about 60 GW.

Questions and answers
What power do the hydrogenerators have?
From 6 to 1000 MW per unit. For Francis units the range is 10–1000 MW, for Pelton 12–150 MW, and for reversible pumped-storage units 10–450 MW.
For which types of hydro units are they made?
For Francis, Kaplan (up to 190–200 MW), bulb (up to 75–80 MW), Pelton and reversible pumped-storage units. The generator is usually supplied as part of the hydro unit.
What cooling is used on high-power machines?
Air, water or evaporative, depending on power and rotational speed. Evaporative cooling of the stator winding is used on the 700 MW units of the Three Gorges plant.
