Description
GENERA is a new line of generators for wind turbines, which the manufacturer presents as the start of a new era of generator technology for wind turbines. The development builds on more than 30 years of operating experience, new technologies and international cooperation, and the design has been validated. The line was created by an international team with many years of experience, and the task was to increase efficiency, durability and economical use of materials.
The main feature is the absence of magnets and rare earth materials even in large power classes. The windings are made of aluminum or copper, and aluminum can replace the more expensive copper, which improves material utilization. GENERA is intended for turbines of 10 MW and above without rare earth elements.
The stated characteristics are as follows. Power density reaches 700 W/kg. Efficiency is increased and annual energy yield is high, because power is not spent on external cooling fans. The noise level is 6 dB(A) lower, which matters for night operation near housing. The generator length is 25 % shorter, so it is easier to fit in the nacelle, and even generators of 10 MW and above can be transported by standard trucks and in containers. The design is low-maintenance with long service intervals, so downtime is reduced. The absence of external cooling fans removes one of the units requiring maintenance from the generator.
GENERA works with any gearbox and is especially optimized in a pair with the REVO system, and the optimized gear ratio gives high efficiency of the whole drivetrain. The manufacturer notes support for reactive power delivery and compatibility with grid requirements, which eases integration into wind farms. The set of technologies is configured to the customer's requirements, and not all functions are mandatory for a particular project.
For operation, digital monitoring sensors are provided that show the condition in real time and make it possible to service the machine in advance. Electrical and mechanical condition fingerprints (health check) reveal potential faults beforehand and reduce downtime. Applications include large onshore and offshore wind turbines with geared drivetrains where power density, low noise, transportability and independence from the supply of rare earth materials matter.
