EESG: electrically excited synchronous generator for wind turbines up to 10 MW
EESG are electrically excited synchronous generators for geared wind turbines of up to 10 MW. The rotor field is created by an excitation winding, so permanent magnets and rare earth materials are not needed. The EESG-A and EESG-W versions differ in the cooling system.

Description
EESG is intended for geared wind turbines. Unlike permanent magnet generators, this machine uses no magnets or rare earth materials, and the rotor field is created by an excitation winding. The manufacturer describes such generators as machines of robust design, as a rule very low-maintenance and exceptionally stable in operation. Another advantage is controllability through regulation of the excitation current. According to the manufacturer, the power range of the series is continuously adapted to market requirements.
The basic versions per the generator catalog are as follows. EESG-A has modular air/air cooling, a shaft height of 400–1000 mm and power up to 10 MW. EESG-W has modular air/water cooling, the same shaft height of 400–1000 mm and power up to 10 MW. As with other series, the list shows only the most common range, and the shaft heights, power and cooling system are selected for the particular turbine. Grid frequency is 50 or 60 Hz.
Common solutions of the manufacturer's generators also apply to this series. Insulation with moisture protection and vibration-resistant windings are designed for operation in any climate and at any tower height. There are versions for an extended temperature range (cold and hot climate) and special paint systems for onshore and offshore conditions that protect against corrosion in a salty atmosphere. Standard temperature sensors are complemented by optional vibration, leakage and other sensors.
The bearings are designed for the whole service life of the turbine and can be replaced in the nacelle, and on request reinforced bearings or plain bearings are fitted, while insulated bearings are standard. The second shaft end is intended for speed sensors and encoders, and low-noise variants exist. The generators are designed with an efficiency curve optimized for energy yield, can be made for increased voltage and frequency tolerances and can operate in weak grids. Before shipment, 100 % quality control is carried out. Applications include onshore and offshore wind turbines where avoiding rare earth magnets and controllable excitation matter, deliveries for new turbines and replacement generators.

Questions and answers
What EESG versions exist by cooling system?
EESG-A has modular air/air cooling, EESG-W modular air/water cooling. Both versions have a shaft height of 400–1000 mm and power up to 10 MW.
Does EESG contain permanent magnets?
No, the rotor field is created by an excitation winding, and magnets and rare earth materials are not used. The excitation current is regulated, which makes the machine controllable.
Which wind turbines and grids is EESG suitable for?
For onshore and offshore geared wind turbines of up to 10 MW. The generator is available for grid frequencies of 50 and 60 Hz.
