Eco Bulb is a generator for bulb-type horizontal straight-flow hydro units rated up to 10 MVA, and HSZ belongs to a related series of salient-pole synchronous machines up to 15 MVA with external cooling. The generator sits in a streamlined bulb directly in the flow path of the hydropower plant. Such units work at low heads and high water flows.

Description
Bulb units are installed at run-of-river and diversion hydropower plants on rivers and canals. The second field relates to building and refurbishing small low-head plants at existing dams, locks and irrigation canals. The Eco Bulb generator has up to 100 poles and voltage up to 15 kV. HSZ is rated for the same voltage with up to 50 poles. A large pole count corresponds to the low turbine speed at low head, so the generator is coupled directly to the runner, without a gearbox. HSZ with fewer poles is designed for higher speed and higher output, up to 15 MVA.
The machine is horizontal and has no bearings of its own; it sits on the turbine shaft. Hence the mounting arrangement IM5210, special variants on request. IEC frame sizes are up to 2000. Water flows along the unit and around the bulb on all sides, so cooling is external. In the IC97W scheme a separate independent coolant is used. In the IC46W scheme air circulates in a closed circuit with additional ventilation, and heat passes through the bulb shell to the surrounding water. The bulb shell is at once part of the flow path and the heat exchange surface. Degree of protection in the final assembly is up to IP68, stator insulation class F or H, and the machines comply with IEC 60034.
For small hydropower the manufacturer makes a full set of machines. These are high-voltage synchronous and induction generators, permanent magnet generators and induction pump motors. PM generators work, among others, in Voith StreamDiver turbines of approximately up to 1700 kW per unit at low heads. The bulb generator and turbine form one assembly in the flow path, so the machine is selected for the specific turbine, head and flow.
Generators can be supplied with digital voltage regulators, protection and complete control cabinets with synchronization. This way the plant gets the generator together with the control system from one supplier. During refurbishment this simplifies the replacement of old equipment, since the generator, excitation and protection are coordinated in one project. A generator request should give the output and turbine speed, grid voltage, cooling scheme, internal dimensions of the bulb, and the required excitation system.
