Description
Besides medium-speed machines, the company supplied permanent magnet generators of two more types for wind power. Direct-drive PMGs are low-speed and work without a gearbox. High-speed ones are installed in drive trains with a multi-stage gearbox. In most cases the generator is supplied together with a full-power frequency converter (FPC) as a ready drive train package. This makes it simpler to certify the drive train and integrate it into the turbine.
A direct-drive generator rotates at the speed of the turbine rotor. The gearbox, the most heavily loaded mechanical unit of a wind turbine, disappears from the drive train. According to the company, serial deliveries of direct-drive PMGs for the 3 MW coastal ScanWind turbine began in 2007. Third-generation packages with a 4.25 MW PMG and an FPC for offshore wind turbines were also supplied to ScanWind. The German PROKON ordered 100 direct-drive 3 MW "PMG + FPC" packages, and Dongfang received a second-generation package with a 1.5 MW direct-drive generator with an external rotor.
High-speed PMGs work in drive trains with a gearbox. A family of high-speed generators of the 3 MW class has been supplied to the Korean Doosan since 2009. 5 MW "PMG + FPC" packages went to the offshore turbines of Chongqing Haizhuang Windpower and to an onshore turbine of Taiyuan Heavy Industry in China. Garuda Vaayu Shakthi in India received 700 kW packages, and ATB Riva Calzoni in Italy installed prototype 500 kW drive trains.
Excitation by permanent magnets removes slip rings and external rotor supply. Losses and maintenance needs are reduced, and the machine has no parts that are easily damaged. Failures are rare, and maintenance is kept to a minimum. Paired with an FPC, the generator meets grid requirements for voltage dip ride-through and reactive power. The manufacturer notes that this combination increases annual energy production and lowers the life cycle costs of the turbine.
The range from 0.5 to 5 MW is given on the basis of actual deliveries, not as a catalog line. The company designs and adapts the machine for a specific turbine within the project, so the drive type, power and rotor design are determined together with the turbine manufacturer.
