Description
Custom synchronous generators are intended for stationary and mobile gensets on diesel and gas engines operating in standby mode and in prime power mode. They complement the LSA and TAL standard ranges in the area of large ratings and voltages. According to the manufacturer, generators in this category are produced with ratings up to 20 MW and voltages up to 15 000 V, and are combined with low-, medium- and high-speed engines.
Insulation is class H, with temperature rise to class H, F or B, and the temperature margin extends service life. Cooling options are open ODP, or closed with an air/water (CACW) or air/air (CACA) air cooler. Bearings are sleeve or rolling, depending on power and rotational speed. The generators are built to the main international standards (IEC, NEMA, ISO) and grid requirements, and a set of accessories is available.
The manufacturer makes custom low-, medium- and high-voltage generators rated 10 to 35 000 kVA and adapts them to customer requirements, application and certification. The main application areas are power plants for grid generation and peak shaving, cogeneration, industry, oil and gas, data centres and marine installations.
Voltage is regulated by analogue or digital regulators (D550, D700) with grid-parallel operation functions and compliance with grid codes, including VDE-AR-N 4110/4105, RfG and G99. To order, reactances, time constants, the no-load characteristic and an IEEE exciter model (AC8B per IEEE 421) are provided for grid connection studies.
Practical examples. For a black start installation at the Yanbu power plant (Saudi Arabia), a medium-voltage high-speed 4000 kVA generator at 4.16 kV was built in an IP23 design for an ambient temperature of 50 °C and humidity up to 100 %. It starts gas turbine generators whose 600 kW, 4.16 kV starting motors draw an inrush current 6 times the rated value. For an oil and gas facility in Abu Dhabi, a 3000 kVA, 3.3 kV, 50 Hz, IP55, CACA, class H/B generator was built for ambient temperatures up to 55 °C.

Questions and answers
What power and voltage do the custom engine generators have?
According to the manufacturer, power reaches 20 MW and voltage 15 000 V. The overall range of custom low-, medium- and high-voltage generators is 10 to 35 000 kVA.
Which cooling options and insulation classes are available?
Cooling is open ODP, closed air/water (CACW) or air/air (CACA). Insulation is class H, with temperature rise to class H, F or B.
Do the regulators comply with grid codes?
The analogue or digital D550 and D700 regulators have grid-parallel operation functions and comply with grid codes, including VDE-AR-N 4110/4105, RfG and G99. For grid connection studies, an IEEE AC8B exciter model per IEEE 421 is provided.
