Description
Compact hydro generators are intended for small hydropower plants. Over the years the company has built and supplied more than 175 generators for small hydropower plants rated up to 15 MVA; the limiting rating of a specific machine depends on rotational speed. The generators are developed, designed and manufactured individually or in small series, and they pass final tests at the factory. Assembly, testing and preparation for shipment are carried out by the manufacturer itself. The company has long experience in this field and has supplied a wide variety of machine types. Rated parameters, the stator and rotor design and the cooling scheme are determined by project requirements.
The rated voltage of the range is from 400 V to 13.8 kV. This item covers versions for voltages above 1 kV, while low-voltage machines are listed in a separate item. The stator winding is of coil type, with a Global VPI (GVPI) or Resin Rich (RR) insulation system. The rotor can be cylindrical or salient-pole. Excitation is brushless, with a permanent magnet pilot exciter (PMG) on request. Cooling is open or closed, with or without a heat exchanger, and the outer diameter of the stator reaches 2500 mm. The 2025 catalogue also lists induction generators for small hydropower plants, whereas the core of this item is synchronous machines.
For the Madison Dam hydropower plant in Montana (USA, a NorthWestern Energy project), four synchronous generators of 4100 kVA, 4000 V, 300 rpm with brushless excitation were built together with an Austrian turbine supplier. The scope of supply included excitation systems, automatic bearing lubrication systems and generator earthing. The first generator was commissioned in December 2021, the last in March 2022. For the Akhalkalaki 1 small hydropower plant in Georgia, three generators of 3000 kVA each at 600 rpm were supplied.
The manufacturer delivers small hydropower plants turnkey. The package includes the generator and turbine, control, measurement, protection and remote control systems, low and medium voltage switchgear, and hydromechanical equipment for the water intake. The generator is selected for the specific turbine, head and rotational speed, so the frame size and design are agreed at the project stage.
