VZ-E, vacuum contactor and combined unit 3.6/7.2 kV, 200/400 A
VZ-E is a series of vacuum electromagnetic contactors (VMC) and combined contactor and power fuse units at 3.6/7.2 kV. The devices are designed for frequent switching and protection of high-voltage motors, transformers and capacitor banks. They are installed in the switchgear of plants, buildings and power stations, including MS-E switchgear.

Description
Contactors are produced for a rated operating current of 200 A (VZ2) and 400 A (VZ4). There are fixed (type P), fixed on wheels (type G) and drawout (types E and F with bushing insulators) versions. Drawout combined units come as standard (type C), bushing (type D) and slim (type V, 200 A only). Each type is ordered with continuous electrical holding (E) or with a mechanical latch (L).
The rated voltage is 7.2/3.6 kV according to IEC, which corresponds to 6.6/3.3 kV according to JEM, the frequency 50/60 Hz. The contactor itself interrupts 4 kA. In the combined unit a short-circuit current of up to 40 kA is limited and interrupted by the manufacturer's current-limiting power fuses. The withstand to through current is 4 kA for 2 s for 200 A and 4 kA for 10 s or 8 kA for 0.5 s for 400 A. The devices comply with JEM 1167 and IEC 60470.
Compared with the previous series, overload capacity has been increased, the utilisation category extended from AC3 to AC4, and electrical endurance is rated at AC3. The mechanical latch is replaced by a magnetic one with a permanent magnet, so mechanical parts need no lubrication. The bearings of the three-phase shaft are made of antifriction plastic, and the rubbing parts are coated with long-life grease. The vacuum chamber with low switching overvoltages reduces the overvoltage protection requirements.
The materials are non-flammable, UL94 V-0 class. The position switch and the control circuit terminals are covered. For drawout versions with bushing insulators, degree of protection IP3X is optionally available. The operation counter and the blown fuse indicator are now part of the standard equipment. The control circuit works on AC or DC.
The design does not use the six substances restricted by RoHS, that is mercury, cadmium, lead, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers. Material names are marked on the main plastic parts, which simplifies disposal. If the contactor operation must be fully synchronised with fuse blowing, the manufacturer advises choosing a device with a higher breaking capacity.
