ABSD — air-break switch-disconnector for overhead lines, 11–33 kV, 630 A

ABSD is a three-pole air-break switch-disconnector rated 12/36 kV and 630 A for 11 and 33 kV overhead distribution lines. It is mounted on a pole to sectionalise the line and provide a visible break, primarily in rural networks. The series was developed together with a British network operator for networks in the UK and export markets with similar requirements.

Description

The device is modular. Three pole units on post insulators are fixed on a crossarm, and a connecting tube with a crank transmits motion from the operating handle to all three phases at once. The contact system with spring-loaded self-aligning tinned copper blades has been in service in networks for more than 40 years. Flexible braided shunts carry current to the blades, the bushings need no lubrication, and many parts are made of stainless steel. The load-bearing metalwork is hot-dip galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461.

Versions differ in operating mechanism and arc-quenching method, as provided by ENA G18. CAT 2 has a dependent manual mechanism and arcing horns, breaks a load current of 20/10 A and makes onto a fault of up to 3 kA. CAT 1 with the same mechanism gets load-break interrupter chambers and switches 400 A at the same making current. CAT 0 has an independent spring mechanism and chambers, breaks the full 630 A, and the fault making current reaches 10 kA. For all versions the peak withstand current is 40 kA, frequency 50/60 Hz, impulse withstand voltage 110/200 kV, and insulator creepage distance from 340/1300 mm.

Silicone composite insulators are fitted as standard, porcelain on request. Insulators with increased creepage distance are available for deserts and sea coasts. Instead of simple-break horns, load-break chambers with arc-quenching grids or self-contained load-break switches can be ordered. The device is operated by a hook stick from height (standard version) or by a handle from the ground. The hook stick removes the need for an organised handle earth. Two- and three-stage interlocks are supplied to the customer's operating rules.

ABSD is mounted at the top of the pole or under the crossarm, horizontally or vertically. It is installed on standard structures or taken as a set with metalwork and fixed directly to a wooden pole with two M20 bolts. Each device is assembled, adjusted and tested on a bench at the factory, so no adjustment on site is needed, and typical installation takes less than 15 minutes. Manufacture and testing take place at the factory in Stoke-on-Trent to IEC 60265-1, IEC 60694, IEC 62271, BS EN 60129 and ENATS 41-36.

Questions and answers

What current does ABSD break in the different categories?

CAT 2 breaks 20/10 A, CAT 1 up to 400 A, CAT 0 the full 630 A. The fault making current is 3 kA for CAT 2 and CAT 1 and 10 kA for CAT 0.

What network voltage is the device intended for?

Rated voltage is 12/36 kV, so the device works in 11 and 33 kV distribution networks. Impulse withstand voltage is 110/200 kV, rated current 630 A.

To which standards is ABSD manufactured?

To IEC 60265-1, IEC 60694, IEC 62271, BS EN 60129 and ENATS 41-36. The metalwork is hot-dip galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461.
