Description
The apparatus is installed on all types of rail transport on five continents, both on the manufacturer's own trains and on rolling stock of other builders. More than 150 000 units are in service, experience in this field exceeds 50 years, and development is handled by a separate competence centre. The range covers circuit breakers, contactors and disconnectors both for trains and for traction power supply infrastructure.
HSCB high-speed DC circuit breakers are produced for 750, 1500 and 3000 V and thermal currents from 1200 to 5000 A. The operating temperature range of the breaker is from −40 to +70 °C, and the first maintenance is required after 250 000 operations. For urban rolling stock there is a very compact roof-mounted HSCB box for 750 or 1500 V DC, with more than 3000 such boxes in service. Natural ventilation keeps dust and condensate out, and the box is serviced without special tools. The breaker rating is selected according to the catenary voltage and the continuous current of the traction circuit of a specific train.
VCB vacuum circuit breakers for 25 kV are intended for AC rolling stock. The three-phase vacuum contactor for 4 kV with vacuum interrupters is designed for traction systems with permanent magnet synchronous motors. The components comply with current standards and are designed for temperatures below −40 °C and above +85 °C and for extreme humidity. The apparatus is supplied in its own enclosure as a separate unit or without an enclosure for integration into cabinets and equipment boxes of the train.
Projects include Coradia Stream Pop trains for Trenitalia with 3 kV HSCB. Coradia Stream IC-NG trains for NS received 1500 V HSCB and 25 kV VCB. PRASA electric trains in South Africa are equipped with HSCB at 3 kV and with VCB vacuum circuit breakers at 25 kV, with production and service organised locally.
Service covers repair, spare parts, test benches and training of the customer's personnel. Overhaul of the apparatus is carried out by the service centre in Tarbes (France). The design is built for low life cycle costs and simple maintenance, so the apparatus suits both new trains and fleet modernisation.

Questions and answers
What voltages and currents are HSCB high-speed circuit breakers made for?
HSCB breakers are produced for 750, 1500 and 3000 V DC and thermal currents from 1200 to 5000 A. The operating temperature range is from −40 to +70 °C.
What is offered for 25 kV AC rolling stock?
For 25 kV AC networks there are VCB vacuum circuit breakers. They are installed, among others, on Coradia Stream IC-NG trains for NS and on PRASA electric trains.
How often does HSCB need maintenance?
The first maintenance of the high-speed circuit breaker is required after 250 000 operations. The compact roof-mounted HSCB box is serviced without special tools, and more than 3000 such boxes are in service.
