VPR — vacuum circuit breaker 3.6–24 kV, up to 4000 A, up to 50 kA
VPR is a series of medium-voltage vacuum circuit breakers for 3.6–24 kV for power plant, substation, industrial and infrastructure switchgear. The new generation is designed with safety, environmental friendliness and ease of maintenance in mind and is installed, among others, in MS-E switchgear. The breakers comply with IEC 62271-100 and JEC-2300.

Description
The range of versions covers five voltage classes. The 3-VPR-D and 6-VPR-D are rated for 3.6 and 7.2 kV, 630/1250 A, 20 and 25 kA. The 10-VPR-D for 12 kV has rated currents of 630–3150 A and breaking currents of 25, 31.5 and 40 kA, while the 10-VPR-50C(D) extends the parameters to 4000 A and 50 kA. The 15-VPR-D for 15 kV is produced for 630–2000 A with breaking up to 40 kA, and the 20-VPR-C/D for 24 kV for 630–2500 A, 16 and 25 kA. The interrupting time is 3 cycles. Type tests have been passed for classes M2, E2 and C2 per IEC 62271-100-2012.
The design of the 10-VPR-D relies on the company's own vacuum interrupters. New contact materials, arc control by spiral contacts and refined insulation made the interrupter 16 % smaller than the previous one at class E2. The main circuit in a cylindrical insulating frame is self-cooled up to 3150 A, and in the 10-VPR-50 up to 4000 A, so no fans are needed in the cubicle. The lightning impulse level reaches 95 kV. Exposed heated current-carrying parts are reduced to a minimum, and this protects against short circuits, including those caused by small animals.
The spring operating mechanism develops the proven BH-1H mechanism. Long-life grease and oil-free latch bearings extended the lubrication interval from 3 to 6 years. The spring charging motor is the same for AC and DC, so the range of spare parts is smaller.
A new racking-in and racking-out scheme with the door closed, using a cam-and-slider mechanism, supplements the traditional lever, and the operator does not stand in front of an open compartment during the operation. Options include an additional auxiliary contact block and an earthing switch. Breakers up to 3150 A are transported in the switchgear on transport locks. In terms of connection dimensions they are compatible with the previous 10-VPR-C series, so replacement in existing cubicles does not require rework of the frame.
The design does not use the six substances restricted by RoHS, including mercury, cadmium, lead and hexavalent chromium. Small parts such as pins and screws have an anticorrosion coating without hexavalent chromium.

Questions and answers
Which VPR version is needed for 4000 A?
The 10-VPR-50C(D) model for 12 kV, rated current 4000 A, breaking current 50 kA, self-cooled without fans.
For which classes have the breakers been tested?
Type tests have been passed for classes M2, E2 and C2 per IEC 62271-100-2012. The breakers also comply with the Japanese JEC-2300.
Can the 10-VPR-D be installed in place of old 10-VPR-C breakers?
Yes, in terms of connection dimensions the 10-VPR-D frame is compatible with the 10-VPR-C series. The positions of mounting holes, terminals and barriers are the same.
