Description
The LVC contactor is designed for industrial applications with many switching operations, and above all for switching motors and capacitor banks on and off. The manufacturer recommends it for capacitor banks with a voltage from 3.3 to 6.6 kV. The arc is extinguished in vacuum and remains under full control during capacitive switching, where conventional devices tend to restrike. Capacitive switching is hard for any device, because after switching off a charge remains on the capacitor and double voltage acts across the contacts.
Three independent vacuum poles are mounted on an insulating structure, so the insulation of the device is reinforced. The contactor has a very long service life, compact dimensions and low weight, and is simple to maintain. The arc-extinguishing medium of the vacuum poles does not need replacement, as in oil devices. The mass is 35 kg and the dimensions are 353 × 398.6 × 247 mm.
The rated voltage is 6.6 kV, the rated current 400 A (3 × 400 A), the breaking capacity 4 kA and the frequency 50–60 Hz. The control circuit is supplied from 220 V AC, and a 110 V DC version is available to order (VC-6Z44ED 6.6 kV 220V and 110V). The contactor complies with IEC 60470 for high-voltage AC contactors. The 110 V DC version is convenient where the control circuit is supplied from the substation battery.
LVC switches the steps of CIRKAP CMFC and CMAR automatic installations in 3.3–6.6 kV networks. It controls the starting of high-voltage induction motors of pumps, fans, compressors and mills, and is used for frequent operational switching in industrial switchgear. In switchgear the contactor works together with RMV current-limiting reactors. They reduce the inrush currents on capacitor energising to values permissible under IEC 60871-1 and by the breaking capacity of the device. Without a reactor the peak inrush currents of a bank may exceed what the contacts can withstand, especially when other steps operate nearby. The contactor does not break short-circuit currents above 4 kA, so the circuit is protected by a separate device.
