GIT gas-insulated (SF₆) power transformers up to 330 kV and 400 MVA

GIT are power transformers with SF₆ gas as insulation and cooling medium instead of transformer oil, for voltages up to 330 kV and ratings up to 400 MVA. They are installed where fire safety and compactness are critical, at underground and urban substations, hydropower plants and offshore platforms.

Description

The manufacturer supplied the first gas-insulated transformer in Japan in 1967, and since then over 1,400 such machines have been installed worldwide. The company's research went toward non-flammability, environmental friendliness and larger unit ratings. According to the manufacturer, it alone has managed to build high-rated transformers with fully SF₆ insulation and fully gas cooling. From the first machines the series has grown to 330 kV and 400 MVA. It was developed precisely for sites where an oil-filled transformer is difficult or forbidden to install.

SF₆ gas insulates the active part and at the same time removes heat from the windings and the magnetic core. There is no oil in the tank, so the design is non-flammable and non-explosive, and oil pollution of the environment is ruled out. No oil monitoring or replacement is needed, there are no leaks, and maintenance over the service life is minimal. In service the SF₆ pressure in the tank is monitored. No oil sumps or oil collection systems are needed under the transformer. The transformer occupies a smaller area, which is noticeable in dense urban development or in an underground machine hall.

GIT is connected directly to GIS. This forms a fully gas-insulated substation that meets the requirements of accident prevention, safety and minimum footprint. The current-carrying parts from the GIS to the transformer stay in the gas environment, without open busbars. An example of supply is a 275 kV, 300 MVA transformer for the Oi Futo substation of TEPCO Power Grid.

Typical sites are underground and indoor 66-330 kV substations in cities, hydropower plants with underground machine halls, offshore and industrial sites with raised fire safety requirements, and traction substations. Traction substations are often located within urban development, so compactness matters for them too. For underground rooms the absence of a flammable liquid simplifies fire protection requirements. On offshore platforms the area is limited and fire and explosion safety requirements are strict, so an oil-free transformer is appropriate there.

Transformers, GIS and surge arresters are built at the Hamakawasaki plant in Kawasaki, and transformers also at the Mie plant. The company's high-voltage test laboratories are JAB accredited. Since 1978 the company has completed over 100 turnkey substations abroad with voltages up to 800 kV, so a gas-insulated transformer can be ordered together with GIS from one manufacturer.

Questions and answers

What are the voltage and rating of GIT gas-insulated transformers?

Rated voltage up to 330 kV, rating up to 400 MVA. An example of supply is a 275 kV, 300 MVA transformer for the Oi Futo substation.

For which sites is GIT chosen instead of an oil-filled transformer?

For underground and indoor 66-330 kV substations in cities, hydropower plants in underground machine halls, and offshore and industrial sites with raised fire safety requirements. Without oil the design is non-flammable and non-explosive.

Can GIT be connected directly to GIS?

Yes, direct connection to GIS forms a fully gas-insulated substation with minimum footprint.
