Shunt reactors for high and extra-high voltage up to 500 kV

High and extra-high voltage shunt reactors up to 500 kV for voltage control in trunk networks. The reactor draws inductive current and compensates the charging power of transmission lines at times of light load. The company built its first 500 kV reactor in 1978.

Description

A long overhead or cable line under voltage generates capacitive charging power. At night and on weekends consumption falls and the network voltage rises. A shunt reactor draws lagging current and brings the voltage back to the permissible level, so it is installed at substations where lines work with large load swings.

The magnetic core is assembled from radially arranged blocks of electrical steel, and the non-magnetic gaps between the blocks are fitted with ceramic spacers. This design gives low vibration, low losses and a reduced reactor size. For an apparatus that works under voltage around the clock, vibration and losses directly affect service life and operating costs.

Since the first 500 kV reactor the company has supplied many high-voltage reactors of large rating. It has large test stands on which maximum-rating reactors are verified at the factory, before shipment to site.

Shunt reactors belong to the company's substation equipment range together with transformers, GIS, surge arresters and static var compensators (SVC). The reactor compensates line charging power continuously, while SVC is used where the voltage must be controlled quickly. Equipment for a network node can be ordered from one manufacturer.

Reactors are used at substations and transmission lines of 220–500 kV, on long cable lines, and in networks with variable load and a large share of solar and wind generation. Transformers, GIS and surge arresters are made at the Hamakawasaki plant in Kawasaki, transformers also at the Mie plant, and the company's high-voltage laboratories are JAB accredited. Since 1978 the company has delivered abroad more than 100 turnkey substations of up to 800 kV.

Questions and answers

What voltage class are the shunt reactors designed for?

Up to 500 kV, and the company built its first 500 kV reactor in 1978. They are used at substations and lines of 220–500 kV.

How does the magnetic core design differ?

The core is assembled from radially arranged blocks of electrical steel with ceramic spacers in the non-magnetic gaps. This reduces vibration, losses and size.

Which networks need shunt reactors?

Long overhead and cable lines, networks with variable load and a large share of solar and wind plants, where the voltage rises at times of light load.
