RMV — MV choke (current-limiting) reactors for capacitor banks, 50–200 A

RMV are air-core current-limiting reactors for rated currents from 50 to 200 A for medium-voltage capacitor banks. They limit the inrush current on bank energising to values that the capacitors and switching devices can withstand. The reactors are epoxy-cast and made to IEC 60289.

Description

Very large transient currents and voltages occur when a capacitor bank is energised. The IEC 60871-1 standard limits the peak inrush current that a bank can withstand to 100 times the rated current. If the calculated inrush exceeds this limit, RMV reactors are placed in the circuit.

The required inductance depends on the installation conditions. First of all, the short-circuit power of the network, the presence of other banks operating in parallel and the breaking capacity of the circuit breakers and contactors are taken into account. After the reactor is fitted, the peak value of the residual inrush current must also be below the breaking capacity of the device. The calculation is made for the worst case, when the short-circuit power of the network is highest. For this reason the reactor is selected together with the switching device, not separately.

The reactors have no steel core and are cast in epoxy resin, which provides the required insulation level. The colour of the shell is RAL 8016, and mounting is by M12 or M16 bolts depending on the type. The short-time withstand current is 43 In for 1 s. The air-core design does not saturate at large currents, so the inductance stays constant during the inrush.

The designation contains the size, the rated current and the inductance in microhenries. The RMV-260 series measures 370 × 290 × 110 mm and weighs 8–14 kg, and includes RMV-260-50-350, RMV-260-60-250, RMV-260-100-100, RMV-260-125-50 and RMV-260-175-30. The RMV-330 series measures 470 × 355 × 110 mm and weighs about 19 kg, and includes RMV-330-60-450, RMV-330-75-350, RMV-330-90-250, RMV-330-125-100 and RMV-330-200-50. Together the range covers currents from 50 to 200 A and inductance from 30 to 450 µH.

RMV reactors are fitted in CIRKAP frame-mounted and enclosed banks and in automatic multi-step MV installations, and they also replace reactors in operating switchgear of industrial plants and substations. In a multi-step bank a reactor is fitted in each step, because the largest inrush occurs when a step is switched in parallel with those already energised. Such steps are switched by LVC vacuum contactors. When a reactor is replaced in an operating installation, the rated current, inductance and dimensions are checked so that the new reactor fits the same M12 or M16 mountings and the cell envelope.

Questions and answers

When are RMV reactors needed in a capacitor bank?

When the calculated inrush current exceeds 100 times the rated current of the bank set by IEC 60871-1. The reactor reduces the transient current to a value permissible for the capacitors and the switching device.

What currents and inductances are in the RMV range?

The RMV-260 series covers 50, 60, 100, 125 and 175 A, and the RMV-330 series from 60 to 200 A. The inductance is from 30 to 450 µH.

Is RMV suitable as a replacement for РБ/РТОС or ФРОС type reactors in capacitor banks?

Selection is made by purpose and main parameters, first of all by the rated current and the inductance calculated for the inrush of the particular bank. Agree the final choice of size from the range of 50–200 A and 30–450 µH with the manager.
