Shunt reactors

Shunt reactors compensate the charging power of power lines and cables. They limit the voltage rise at low network load and are installed at substations and at wind and solar plants.

Purpose
compensation of capacitive power of lines and cables, limiting the Ferranti effect
Application
substations, wind and solar plants (grid code requirements)

Description

A long line or cable that is open-ended or lightly loaded generates capacitive power, and the voltage at the end of the line rises. The reactor suppresses this Ferranti effect by absorbing the excess capacitive power. Reactors are installed at substations, and also at wind and solar plants where the grid code requires it. The reactor parameters are selected for a specific line or cable network.

Questions and answers

Why is a shunt reactor needed?

It compensates the charging power of power lines and cables and limits the voltage rise at low load.

Are reactors used at wind and solar plants?

Yes, they are installed there to meet grid code requirements.

What effect does the reactor counter?

The Ferranti effect, where the voltage at the end of a lightly loaded line rises because of its capacitance.
