Shunt reactors
Oil-filled shunt reactors compensate reactive power in high-voltage networks. An example design is a three-phase 75 Mvar reactor at 52.5 kV.
- Purpose
- compensation of the capacitance of long overhead lines and HV cables (Ferranti effect)
- Example design
- three-phase 75 Mvar, 52.5 kV

Description
The reactor compensates the capacitance of long overhead lines and HV cables. Without such compensation, the voltage rises at the end of a lightly loaded line, a phenomenon known as the Ferranti effect. The reactors have oil insulation, and the implemented design is three-phase. Parameters are selected for the line or cable that has to be compensated.
