EDD — single-phase air-core MV damping reactors up to 36 kV for capacitor banks

EDD single-phase air-core reactors limit the inrush current when MV capacitor banks are switched on. The indoor version is rated for a current up to 500 A and a voltage up to 36 kV, and there is an outdoor version for outdoor banks. For a three-phase bank, a reactor is installed in each phase.

Description

When an uncharged bank is connected, a large current arises that can damage the capacitors and switching apparatus. Inductance in the circuit limits its magnitude and rate of rise. A reactor without a core does not saturate, so the inductance remains stable even at large transient currents. It is rated for continuous duty S1, stays connected in series with the bank for the whole time the bank operates and is not bypassed after switching on, while withstanding short-term current surges during switching. Cooling is natural air.

The indoor version per the catalogue card has a rated current up to 500 A, a voltage up to 36 kV, a frequency of 50/60 Hz, insulation class F, climatic class C1/E0 and protection degree IP00. The winding is wound from aluminium strip, from copper strip to order, the terminals are made of electrical copper busbar, and the reactor is mounted on a resin insulator. The inter-turn insulation is class B (130 °C), and at the customer's request it may be different. The winding is impregnated with class H (180 °C) resin by the vacuum pressure method (VPI) and thermally cured, and the coils can optionally be coated with silicone. The parameter tables in the card are compiled for voltages of 7.2, 12, 17.5, 24 and 36 kV.

All types have passed type tests, including the 175 kV lightning impulse test for 36 kV, and heating tests. Each coil is checked by applied voltage, and the insulation resistance, winding resistance and inductance are measured. The indoor version works indoors at cooling air temperatures up to +50 °C (annual average up to +35 °C), a minimum of −25 °C, humidity up to 85 % at +20 °C and an installation altitude up to 1,000 m.

The outdoor version is intended for outdoor capacitor banks and works from −40 to +50 °C. The typical climatic class is C4/E4, the winding is VPI-impregnated and coated with a protective layer, and a protective canopy is installed above the reactor if the project requires it. An example configuration has L = 0.05 mH, a thermal current of 290 A, Um up to 36 kV, class F, duty S1, and complies with EN/IEC 60076-6.

EDD reactors are used in MV static capacitor banks at substations, in reactive power compensation installations, distribution networks, industrial power supply systems and on railways. They are made by the plant in Poland.

Questions and answers

Does the EDD reactor need to be bypassed after the bank is switched on?

No, the reactor is rated for continuous duty S1 and stays connected in series with the bank for the whole time it operates. For a three-phase bank, a reactor is installed in each phase.

What voltage and current are the EDD reactors rated for?

The indoor version is rated for a current up to 500 A and a voltage up to 36 kV at 50/60 Hz. Type tests include a 175 kV lightning impulse for the 36 kV class.

Can the EDD be installed outdoors?

Yes, the outdoor version works from −40 to +50 °C, has climatic class C4/E4, VPI impregnation and a protective coating. A protective canopy is installed above the reactor if the project requires it.
