ED3KH — MV shunt (compensating) reactors 50–1,000 kvar, 3–20 kV

ED3KH three-phase shunt reactors with a magnetic core compensate the capacitive reactive power of long MV cable lines. The rating range is 50–1,000 kvar for a rated voltage of 3–20 kV, frequency 50 or 60 Hz. The reactors are installed at substations of wind and solar power plants, at hydropower plants and in industrial cable networks.

Description

Long MV cable lines generate significant capacitive reactive power. Wind and solar power plants, hydropower plants, extensive cable networks and the mining industry face this. Uncompensated capacitive power means penalties for exceeding the contractual power factor, extra losses in lines and transformers loaded with reactive power, and system instability due to a voltage rise under a capacitive load.

The ED3KH reactor works in a compensation installation that holds the power factor at a set level. Its inductive reactive power is subtracted from the capacitive one, and the network keeps an inductive character with the correct tan φ value. The effective value of the current drawn by the network decreases, and lines and transformers are relieved.

According to the catalogue card, the reactors have natural (AN) or forced air (AF) cooling, insulation class F (155 °C) or H (180 °C), and aluminium or copper windings. Installation is stationary, the protection degree is IP00, and for outdoor operation there is a version in an IP34 enclosure. The design ambient temperature is 40 °C for land use, 45 °C for marine use and above 50 °C for the special version. The reactors comply with PN-EN 60076-1 and PN-EN 60076-6.

The typical range in the card includes 150, 300, 350, 600 and 800 kvar reactors for 15,750 V with ±2×2.5 % taps. For example, a 600 kvar reactor for 15,750 V has an inductance of 1,316 mH, a current of 22 A, an insulation level LI/AC of 95/38 kV, class T40F and duty S1, with aluminium windings and copper terminals. The taps Un−5 %, Un−2.5 %, Un, Un+2.5 % and Un+5 % keep the 600 kvar rating at the actual network voltage.

Options include temperature sensors, wheels, fans and vibration isolators. Temperature can be measured contactlessly with a pyrometer and a converter fixed on a bracket of the reactor or on a separate structure (a wall or fence) at least 0.5 m from the reactor. The magnetic cores are assembled using the plant's own technology with multi-gap cores, the sheet is cut by an automated line, and losses are reduced. The reactors are made in Poland.

Questions and answers

What networks need ED3KH shunt reactors?

Long MV cable networks with uncompensated capacitive reactive power, in particular at substations of wind and solar power plants, hydropower plants and in industry. The rating is 50–1,000 kvar for a voltage of 3–20 kV.

How does the reactor keep its rating when the network voltage deviates?

The winding has taps Un−5 %, Un−2.5 %, Un, Un+2.5 % and Un+5 %. For a 600 kvar reactor at 15,750 V this keeps the rated power at the actual voltage.

Is there a version for outdoor installation?

The standard version is IP00, and for outdoor installation the reactor is placed in an IP34 enclosure. Insulation class F (155 °C) or H (180 °C).
