Complete capacitor banks built on the manufacturer's own capacitors range from automatic 6–35 kV banks to series compensation banks for 750 kV lines. They are installed to raise the power factor, reduce line losses and stabilise voltage in three-phase 50 or 60 Hz networks. A separate line is the capacitor filter banks for HVDC converter substations.

Description
Frame-type banks of 6–110 kV and 600–240,000 kvar are assembled from shunt capacitors, series reactors with a reactance of 1, 5 or 12%, discharge coils, surge arresters, earthing switches, frames, busbars, post insulators and fencing. The connection is one or two stars. The frame of banks up to 20 kV is placed directly on the ground, and at 35 kV and above it is mounted on an insulated platform. The horizontal layout takes little space, the modular frame is easy to transport and assemble on site, and the design suits both outdoor and indoor substations. The banks operate continuously at 1.1 Un and at an effective current of up to 1.3 times rated.
Protection is built on open-delta voltage, voltage differential on phase voltage, bridge current differential and neutral unbalance current. Multi-step automatic 6–35 kV banks have a special switching device and a controller that switches steps on and off according to reactive power. An example of such a bank is the TBBZ10-2000 for 10 kV and 2000 kvar with two steps of 1000 kvar. Communication with the dispatch level runs over RS-485 with telemetering, telesignalling, telecontrol and teleregulation functions.
The manufacturer was the first in China to bring common-tank capacitors into production. In the BAMH38.5/√3-20000-1W of 20,000 kvar the internal sections are placed in a large oil-filled tank. The unit is sealed, low-noise, explosion- and fire-safe and stands directly on a foundation. The TBB35-60000 banks of 60 Mvar are assembled from such units. The compact JBBH10-6000 (6000 kvar, 10 kV) contains the capacitor, reactor, discharge coil, protection and cable cabinet in one enclosed housing. The floor area is more than 50% smaller than for a frame-type bank, and non-electrical protections monitor oil pressure and temperature.
Series compensation banks of 220–750 kV are connected in series with the line; they compensate its inductance and increase transfer capacity. The TCB750/66.34-199000 model is rated 199 Mvar, 3000 A and 22.11 ohm. Capacitor filter banks for HVDC transmission provide a path for harmonics and compensate the reactive power of converters. The TAL500-191217.6 is rated 191.2 Mvar and 442.7 kV with insulation levels of 1175/1550 kV, and has bridge differential protection and a welded frame. Losses in the capacitors do not exceed 0.02%. The banks operate on the 1000 kV Yuheng–Weifang and ±800 kV Zhalute–Qingzhou transmission links.
