Synchronous condensers up to 850 Mvar, up to 27 kV (based on turbo- and hydrogenerators)
Synchronous condensers of the manufacturer with reactive power up to 850 Mvar and rated voltage up to 27 kV, built on the basis of turbo- and hydrogenerators. The machines give the grid voltage control, reactive power, short-circuit power and inertia. They are installed at substations and grid nodes with a high share of renewables, and existing thermal power plant units are also converted to them.

Description
The more renewable generation there is in a power system and the fewer conventional power plants, the worse the voltage quality and stability. Properly placed condensers reduce the risk of system disturbances. The company has more than 1400 installed machines behind it, and its generators are equally suited to power generation and to condenser mode. It has been working on generators since 1920. The basis is turbogenerators, when the maximum contribution to inertia is needed, or salient-pole machines. Available are hydrogen-water-cooled turbogenerators up to 1200 MVA, hydrogen-cooled up to 750 MVA, air-cooled up to 440 MVA and hydrogenerators up to 420 MVA.
Excitation is static, starting is by a static frequency converter SFC or at the customer's request, and the inertia is set to the grid requirements. Three options are offered. A stand-alone package for grid nodes with power electronics and renewables is built from a standard turbogenerator with minor modifications, such as the thrust bearing or the speed sensor gear wheel, or from a fully custom salient-pole machine. For greater inertia and smaller transient frequency deviations a flywheel is added. The standard flywheel is rigidly coupled to a 3000 rpm turbogenerator and rotates in a vacuum, so windage losses are small. It has labyrinth and brush seals, adds 1.35 GVA·s to the shaft line inertia and is already in operation at substations of the Italian grid.
The second option concerns plants with a condenser function. The generator of a gas turbine or combined cycle plant is disconnected from the turbine by a clutch and works as a synchronous condenser, and when active power is needed again, the turbine is reconnected. The third option involves converting existing or obsolete units. Everything is possible here, from the simplest mechanical disconnection of the turbine to turning its shaft into a flywheel.
For the operator TERNA the company supplied 2 × 250 Mvar, 3000 rpm, 19 kV to the Codrongianos substation, commissioned in 2014. In 2020, 8 × 250 Mvar with a flywheel and inertia above 1.75 GVA·s on each shaft line entered operation at the Matera, Foggia, Garigliano, Suvereto, Candia and Villanova sites. At the Brindisi North thermal power plant, generators of another manufacturer were converted into condensers 2 × 370 MVA (2 × 260 Mvar), 20 kV.

Questions and answers
What reactive power and voltage do the synchronous condensers have?
Reactive power up to 850 Mvar, rated voltage up to 27 kV. The basis is turbogenerators up to 1200 MVA or hydrogenerators up to 420 MVA.
Why does a synchronous condenser need a flywheel?
The flywheel increases inertia and reduces transient frequency deviations. A standard vacuum flywheel on a 3000 rpm shaft adds 1.35 GVA·s.
Can an existing thermal plant generator be converted into a synchronous condenser?
Yes, the company converts existing and obsolete units. At the Brindisi North thermal power plant, 2 generators of another manufacturer, 370 MVA (260 Mvar), 20 kV each, were converted this way.
