SVC-Diamond / STATCOM / SVC – FACTS devices for reactive power compensation

The manufacturer FACTS line includes the SVC-Diamond STATCOM on a modular multilevel converter, a STATCOM with a multi-stage transformer, thyristor SVCs from 50 to 450 Mvar and synchronous condensers. The devices dynamically compensate reactive power and stabilize voltage in transmission networks. The company experience in power electronics for this task exceeds 50 years.

Description

The need for FACTS grows together with the retirement of thermal plants and the connection of renewables. The grid loses sources of reactive power, and power flows become less predictable. The manufacturer has long supplied thyristor compensators, and IGBT-based STATCOMs complement the line where a fast response and a minimum of harmonics are needed. The company devices are used to increase line transfer capacity, maintain voltage stability, damp power oscillations (POD) and, in the case of STATCOM, for active harmonic filtering.

A STATCOM consists of a voltage source converter VSC, a coupling reactor, a transformer and a control and protection system. The converter is self-commutated, so its operation does not depend on grid strength. By regulating its own internal voltage, it sets the current into the grid and the exchange of reactive power. In the SVC-Diamond the converter is built on the MMC topology. Many series-connected submodules synthesize an output voltage with very low harmonic content, so filters are generally not needed, and the power is increased by adding submodules. The submodules contain high-power IGBTs, and the company itself produces the IGBT modules, capacitors and bypass switches.

The second STATCOM variant combines a multilevel converter with a multi-stage transformer and delivers very high power in a compact building. This scheme was used for the world's first grid STATCOM of ±80 Mvar in 1991 and the ±450 Mvar installation in 2012, the largest at the time of construction. This version is appropriate when a limited site is allocated for the installation at an operating substation.

Classic static thyristor compensators SVC combine thyristor-controlled reactors (TCR), thyristor-switched capacitor banks (TSC) and filter branches. The power of such installations is from 50 to 450 Mvar and more, and more than 30 SVCs of the company operate worldwide. Synchronous condensers are offered separately. They give the grid inertia and short-circuit current, which power systems with a large share of inverter-based generation lack.

Control algorithms for a specific grid are tuned in the EMT simulation programs PSCAD and EMTP-RV, then verified on a real-time hardware-in-the-loop test bench. A project usually starts with a power system simulation that shows the bottlenecks of the grid. Based on its results the engineers select the type and power of the compensator with an economic justification. The tuned model is then used to verify the behaviour of the compensator during grid faults before commissioning.

Questions and answers

How does the SVC-Diamond STATCOM differ from a classic SVC?

The SVC-Diamond is built on a modular multilevel VSC converter with IGBTs, regulates reactive power independently of grid strength and generates almost no harmonics. A classic SVC works on thyristor-controlled reactors and thyristor-switched capacitors with filter branches.

What power do the manufacturer SVC compensators have?

From 50 to 450 Mvar and more. More than 30 such installations of the company operate worldwide.

What references does the company have for grid STATCOMs?

The world's first grid STATCOM of ±80 Mvar was commissioned in 1991, and the ±450 Mvar installation was built in 2012. Both use the scheme with a multi-stage transformer.
