CIRKAP CMFR / CMAR — MV capacitor units with anti-resonance reactors, 7.2–33 kV, 600–7200 kVAr

CMFR and CMAR are enclosed medium-voltage capacitor units of the CIRKAP series with detuned filters for 7.2–33 kV and 600–7200 kVAr. They are installed in networks with a high level of harmonics, where an ordinary bank risks falling into resonance. The version is fixed (CMFR) or automatic (CMAR).

Description

Where harmonic distortion is significant, the manufacturer recommends fitting banks with detuned filters. Reactors are connected in series with the capacitors and shift the resonant frequency of the circuit below the frequency of the main harmonics. The capacitors are not overloaded by higher harmonic currents, and the network does not get resonant amplification of distortion. Without reactors a bank forms a resonant circuit with the network inductance, which amplifies exactly those harmonics that the load generates.

The unit is assembled in an enclosure of painted treated steel, and versions for indoor and outdoor installation are available. For insulation voltages up to 7.2 kV, iron-core reactors and matched capacitors are used. At higher voltages, air-core reactors are fitted. The voltage range is from 7.2 to 33 kV, the power from 600 to 7200 kVAr, the insulation level 7.2–33 kV, and the network frequency 50 or 60 Hz.

Inside there are CHV-M/CHV-T capacitors with internal fuses. The steps are switched by LVC vacuum contactors, and RMV choke reactors damp the inrush current on energising. The filter tuning and the power of the steps are selected on the basis of a network analysis, for example with power quality analysers. Without such an analysis it is easy to make a mistake with the tuning frequency, so measurements on site are made before the unit is selected.

The difference between the versions is simple. CMFR gives a constant power and suits a load that changes little, for example a single large motor. CMAR switches steps on and off on a signal from the controller and tracks the power factor when the load of a plant or substation changes during the day. In both cases the reactor and capacitors of each step form a detuned filter, so resonance protection works with any number of steps switched on.

The typical load of such networks is non-linear: drives with frequency converters, rectifiers and electric furnaces. The units compensate large motors (typically 3–11 kV) and HV/MV transformers, and work at cement plants, pumping stations, pipelines, mining and paper plants. They are installed at receiving and distribution substations, especially indoor ones where space is limited. Automatic power factor control is also needed at generating plants, for example small hydro and wind plants, and the CMAR version is appropriate here.

Questions and answers

When is a unit with anti-resonance reactors needed instead of an ordinary bank?

When the network has a high level of harmonics from frequency converters, rectifiers or electric furnaces. The reactors shift the resonant frequency below the main harmonics and protect the capacitors from overload.

What reactors are used in CMFR and CMAR?

Up to an insulation level of 7.2 kV iron-core reactors are fitted, and for higher voltages air-core reactors. The range of the units is 7.2–33 kV.

How do CMFR and CMAR differ?

CMFR has a fixed power, while CMAR regulates it automatically in steps. Both units are made in an enclosure for 600–7200 kVAr and a frequency of 50 or 60 Hz.
