CIRKAP BMFC / CMFC — MV capacitor banks, frame-mounted and enclosed, 1–36 kV, up to 14 000 kVAr

CIRKAP BMFC and CMFC are medium-voltage capacitor banks for 1–36 kV and up to 14 000 kVAr for reactive power compensation. The banks are assembled from single-phase or three-phase CHV capacitors with internal fuses. They are installed in industrial networks, at substations and at generating plants.

Description

The CIRKAP series has two main designs. BMFC is built on an open frame of painted treated steel, and CMFC is installed in a metal enclosure. Enclosed banks are fixed or automatic, and all versions operate in 50 or 60 Hz networks. The CHV capacitors in the bank have internal fuses, so the breakdown of a single element does not shut down the whole installation.

A BMFC bank includes capacitors and unbalance current transformers, with optional choke reactors RMV and fast discharge reactors. The range is 7.2 to 33 kV and 600 to 7200 kVAr, the degree of protection is IP00, and the bank can be installed indoors or outdoors. For voltages above 36 kV the bank is designed with a separate frame for each phase and support insulators of the appropriate insulation level. Open banks are typical for distribution substations and especially for high-voltage applications. They are fenced off or placed on raised supports so that nobody can reach live parts.

CMFC is made for voltages from 1 to 36 kV and a power of 100 to 14 000 kVAr, with an insulation level of 7.2–36 kV. The enclosure has a degree of protection of IP23 and suits indoor and outdoor installation. Indoor enclosures are painted RAL 7035, while for outdoor use the steel is additionally treated and painted. The enclosure takes up less space and shields live parts from personnel, so this design is chosen for indoor switching stations. A separate fence or raised supports are not needed for the enclosure, which simplifies installation at an operating site.

CIRKAP banks compensate reactive power in industrial MV networks, of large motors (typically 3–11 kV) and of HV/MV transformers. They are used for fixed or automatic compensation at cement plants, pumping stations, pipelines, mining and pulp and paper plants, and at receiving and distribution substations. Small hydro and wind plants need automatic power factor control, so automatic installations are fitted there. For networks with a high level of harmonics a separate CMFR/CMAR series with anti-resonance reactors is offered, since an ordinary bank in such a network risks falling into resonance.

Questions and answers

What voltage and power range do CMFC banks cover?

Enclosed CMFC banks are made for 1–36 kV and from 100 to 14 000 kVAr, with an insulation level of 7.2–36 kV. The enclosure has a degree of protection of IP23.

How does a BMFC bank differ from a CMFC?

BMFC is mounted on an open frame with a degree of protection of IP00, in the range of 7.2–33 kV and 600–7200 kVAr. CMFC is housed in an IP23 metal enclosure and takes up less space in indoor switching stations.

How are banks for voltages above 36 kV made?

For voltages above 36 kV each phase has a separate frame with support insulators of the appropriate insulation level. This design is typical for high-voltage substations.
