CCSC PLUS, converter-controlled series compensation (MMC) up to 400 kV / 4000 A
CCSC PLUS (Converter Controlled Series Capacitor) is a controlled series compensation system based on a modular multilevel converter (MMC). It smoothly changes the reactance inserted into the line toward capacitive and inductive values and controls power flows within milliseconds. The platform is rated for lines up to 400 kV and current up to 4000 A.

Description
Fixed compensation FSC changes the line reactance by a constant amount. CCSC PLUS adjusts the equivalent reactance smoothly and in both directions, so the operator can relieve overloaded sections, redistribute flows between parallel corridors and make fuller use of the transmission capacity of existing lines. The response is measured in milliseconds, and control keeps pace with fast changes of operating conditions. The grid stays stable in critical conditions as well, in compliance with the N-1 criterion. A single installation works both as a compensator and as a power flow controller, and its setpoints change together with the grid operating mode.
The voltage converter is connected in series with the line, and no high-voltage transformer is needed. The absence of a transformer simplifies the layout and reduces the amount of equipment on site. The current platform covers lines up to 400 kV, higher classes are considered on request, and line currents up to 4000 A, which is enough for most applications in high-voltage grids. The installation is built in containers or assembled on site. The control system is based on the proven SVC PLUS® STATCOM platform, so the hardware and software have already been field-tested in STATCOM installations.
Besides flow control, CCSC PLUS damps electromechanical oscillations (POD), suppresses subsynchronous resonances and torsional interactions with turbine generators (SSR/SSTI), supports emergency operating control (emergency dispatch) and protects the line against overload. The system is designed to meet grid code requirements for the N-1 criterion and power oscillation damping, with maximum equipment protection.
The MMC converter has the same modular structure as the SVC PLUS STATCOM. The technology is especially suitable where the share of renewables is growing quickly and power flows often change direction. In such a grid fixed compensation is useful only in some operating modes, while controlled compensation adapts to each of them. It is also suitable for operators that need to postpone the construction of new lines. The company supports the system throughout its life cycle, from system studies to control software updates in operation. Typical sites are interconnection and trunk lines of 220–400 kV, bottlenecks of the transmission grid, corridors for power evacuation from wind plants and grids with subsynchronous resonance problems.

Questions and answers
What voltage and current is CCSC PLUS rated for?
The current platform is rated for lines up to 400 kV and current up to 4000 A. Higher voltage classes are considered on request.
How does CCSC PLUS differ from FSC?
FSC inserts a fixed capacitive reactance into the line. CCSC PLUS smoothly adjusts the reactance toward capacitive and inductive values and controls power flows within milliseconds.
Does CCSC PLUS need a power transformer?
No, the converter is connected in series with the line without a high-voltage transformer. The design is containerized or assembled on site.
