Description
The KSTAR GP800 series consists of single-phase transformer-type UPS units rated from 1 to 20 kVA. The input and output configuration is 1:1, meaning a single-phase mains supply feeds a single-phase load. The range is aimed at harsh operating conditions, above all industrial and mining sites where the mains voltage varies noticeably over the course of a day.
The 165–275 V AC input range was designed by the manufacturer for mains with large voltage fluctuations. An isolation transformer is installed inside the enclosure. It galvanically separates the load from the mains, improves load capability and resistance to shock overloads, and suppresses noise arriving from the supply line.
By class, the UPS is an online device: the inverter runs continuously and the load is fed from converted voltage rather than directly from the mains. KSTAR provides a cold start, that is, starting directly from the batteries with no mains voltage present. This is useful at sites where, after a complete loss of supply, a critical load must be brought up before the mains returns. The floating switching and charging algorithm is designed to make maximum use of battery capacity.
The transformer design makes the unit heavier than a transformerless UPS of the same rating, so weight and dimensions are checked against the documentation at the design stage. Such UPS units are installed in a separate room or an electrical room with ventilation, and the batteries are placed in cabinets or on racks. Galvanic isolation is useful where the load must be separated from the mains and line noise kept away from sensitive equipment. The output neutral grounding scheme is implemented according to the site design. For control, communication and automation systems at industrial sites, this UPS is installed as a separate power supply node with its own battery group, and connection and setup are carried out according to the operating manual.
To select a model, take the total load in kVA, the required backup time and the battery type. For motors and equipment with high starting currents, a power margin is important. The final configuration, together with the site power supply scheme, is best agreed with a manager.
