ZSP / ZIP — Polymer-housed station and intermediate class surge arresters up to 198 kV (networks up to 230 kV)
ZSP and ZIP are polymer-housed surge arresters of station and intermediate class, rated up to 198 kV and 144 kV respectively. They offer a 10 kA discharge current, a 100 kA high current impulse and withstand short-circuit currents of 80 kA (ZSP) and 50 kA (ZIP). The arresters are installed at substations and on lines of 2.4–230 kV networks.

Description
ZSP and ZIP are designed for substations and lines. They combine the protective characteristics of metal-oxide varistors with the advantages of a polymer housing. The ZSP weighs about 25% and the ZIP about 1/5 as much as a porcelain equivalent, so handling and installation are considerably simpler and the risk of housing damage is lower.
The metal-oxide varistor column is placed inside a fiberglass winding and fitted into the polymer housing. Units of all ratings are supplied as a single assembly, with no stacking of sections even for 198 kV (ZSP) and 144 kV (ZIP). The varistors offer good protective characteristics and remain stable in long-term operation. In the event of an internal fault, the epoxy-glass winding releases the pressure, and the polymer housing prevents porcelain fragments from scattering.
ZSP, station class. Rated voltages 3–198 kV (MCOV 2.55–158 kV) for line-to-line networks of 2.4–230 kV. High current impulse 100 kA, nominal discharge current 10 kA, energy rating 6.1 kJ/kV MCOV, short-circuit withstand 80 kA. Line discharge class exceeds ANSI/IEEE requirements and IEC class 2. ZIP, intermediate class. Ratings 3–144 kV (MCOV 2.55–115 kV) for 2.4–161 kV networks, high current impulse 100 kA, discharge current 10 kA, energy rating 5.0 kJ/kV MCOV, short-circuit withstand 50 kA, working bending load 5000 in·lb. Mounting is on a tripod bracket with 14.2 mm holes for ½″ bolts.
Each arrester is tested for reference voltage, power loss, total leakage current and radio interference level, and the varistors are tested 100% beforehand. Sealing is verified by helium mass spectrometry. The base and nameplate show the catalog number, rated voltage, MCOV, operating current of the pressure relief device, and the serial number with the manufacturing date. The units are listed by REA. The ZIP type gives the advantages of the polymer housing for system voltages up to 161 kV, while the station-class ZSP covers ratings up to 198 kV. The light housing simplifies lifting the arrester onto a structure and reduces the load on the structure.

Questions and answers
Which networks are ZSP and ZIP designed for?
ZSP suits line-to-line networks of 2.4–230 kV and ZIP suits networks of 2.4–161 kV. Their rated voltages are 3–198 kV and 3–144 kV respectively.
What is the short-circuit withstand of ZSP and ZIP?
ZSP withstands a short-circuit current of 80 kA and ZIP 50 kA. Both types have a 100 kA high current impulse and a 10 kA nominal discharge current.
What tests does each arrester undergo?
Reference voltage, power loss, total leakage current and radio interference level are measured, and the varistors are tested at 100%. Sealing is checked with a helium test.
