Description
ZE (series 8132) is a surge arrester in a solid shielded elbow-type housing. It is fitted to standard bushings for separable connectors, and the dead front principle is preserved, that is, there are no exposed live parts in cable distribution devices and transformers.
The ZE surge arrester is specially designed to protect underground (cable) distribution networks. It is placed at the open point of the cable network to prevent doubling of the surge wave at an open end. If an arrester is additionally installed at an intermediate point, the waves reflected from the end are safely discharged.
The housing of peroxide-cured EPDM rubber is fully screened with a cast conductive EPDM sheath. The solid construction requires no assembly on site. Three voltage versions have standard separable connector interfaces to ANSI/IEEE 386 at 15, 25 and 35 kV, and they are compatible with products of the major manufacturers at each voltage level.
In testing, the ZE withstands at least two high-current impulses of 40 kA, 20 long-duration impulses of 75 A lasting 2000 µs, and a duty cycle of 22 discharges of 5 kA, 8/20 µs waveform. After each test the arrester remains thermally stable, and the increase in residual voltage at rated current is less than 10%.
The rated voltage of the ZE denotes the 60 Hz voltage applied during the duty cycle test, and MCOV is the highest continuous operating voltage. The rating is chosen so that the highest continuous phase voltage of the network does not exceed MCOV. Versions 10, 18 and 27 kV are intended for cable networks of 15, 25 and 35 kV rated voltage. Ratings of 3, 6, 10, 12, 18, 24 and 27 kV are available, with weight of 3.0–8.5 lb. The product is approved by REA and is part of the Zforce distribution arrester programme. Rated discharge current is 5 kA. Such an arrester is installed in cable switchgear and on transformers of underground networks, where exposed live parts are not acceptable. The voltage versions differ in dimensions, and the weight is 3.0–8.5 lb depending on the rating.

Questions and answers
Which ZE rating should be chosen for a 15, 25 or 35 kV cable network?
The 10 kV version is intended for 15 kV networks, 18 kV for 25 kV networks, and 27 kV for 35 kV networks. The highest continuous phase voltage of the network must not exceed MCOV.
What tests does the ZE arrester withstand?
Two high-current impulses of 40 kA, 20 long-duration impulses of 75 A lasting 2000 µs, and a duty cycle of 22 discharges of 5 kA, 8/20 µs waveform. The increase in residual voltage at rated current is less than 10%.
What is the shielded elbow-type housing for?
It is fitted to standard separable connector bushings per ANSI/IEEE 386 and keeps the dead front principle. The EPDM housing is fully screened by a conductive sheath.
