Description
Fuse cutouts are designed for overhead distribution networks. They protect against overcurrents, that is, overloads of lines and equipment, short circuits and failures, and operation is visible from the drop-out of the cartridge. The units are assembled and shipped from the plant in York, South Carolina, and comply with the IEEE 2016 standard for fuse cutouts. As standard a synthetic cartridge is used, and the current path is fully copper, which prevents corrosion and gives low contact resistance. For coastal areas a version with stainless steel hardware is offered.
XS Polymer is a light and strong alternative to porcelain, especially for coasts with salt fog. The housing and rib profile meet the criteria of IEC TS 60815 for very heavy pollution conditions. The load-bearing element is an E-glass fibreglass rod, the end fittings and the central bracket are crimped, and the polymer sheath is moulded over the hardware to seal it. The silicone compound has been tested on the manufacturer's transmission insulators.
Porcelain fuses have a solid porcelain housing, a solid core and bird protection. They perform well in dry climates and have a long history of service.
By general characteristics the rated voltage is 15, 27 and 38 kV, BIL 110–170 kV, rated current 100–300 A and interrupting capacity 8000–16 000 A (asym.). For example, the SC15HG116 has 14.4/15 kV, BIL 110 kV, 100 A and 16 000 A, with a cartridge of 11.3″ and creepage distance of 15.3″, while the SC27SG212 has 25/27 kV, BIL 150 kV, 200 A and 10 000 A, with a cartridge of 14.8″ and creepage distance of 22.5″. A reinforced top contact with a recess prevents passing beyond the closed position, and the cartridge cap is reusable. Optionally NEMA and extended brackets are offered, along with line connections by parallel or bolted clamps and solid blades for operation as a disconnector.
The combination of fuse and surge arrester brings overcurrent and overvoltage protection together in one product. The XS Polymer or porcelain fuse is fitted with a Zforce surge arrester (normal and heavy duty, cable entry, 9–21 kV), which simplifies installation, logistics and purchasing and lowers the total cost of installation.
