VV / MV / GV retrofit vacuum circuit breakers 3.6–12 kV for replacing obsolete devices
These retrofit vacuum circuit breakers match the mounting dimensions and secondary circuits of discontinued devices. They extend the service life of existing switchgear without replacing the cubicles. The range includes three types for 3.6–12 kV that replace old vacuum, magnetic blow-out and SF6 circuit breakers.
- VV-10-VPR-25M/25BB
- 11 (13.8) kV; 630–2000 A; 20/25 kA; replaces 10-VPR-25M/25B(B)
- MV-S / MV-L
- 3.6–12 kV; 600–3000 A; 12.5–43.8 kA; replaces magnetic blow-out circuit breakers DHE/DHP
- 10-VPR-40D(GV)
- 12 kV; 1250–3150 A; 40 kA; replaces SF6 circuit breaker 10-SFG-40; IEC 62271-100-2012, M2/E1/C2
- Operating mechanism
- motor-spring (BH-2), maintenance-free for 15 years

Description
The company recommends the replacement because old devices raise failure risk and have no spare parts. Type VV (VV-10-VPR-25M, VV-10-VPR-25BB) replaces vacuum breakers 10-VPR-25M and 10-VPR-25B(B). Their production was discontinued in 1983 and the supply of spare parts in 2000. VV parameters are 11 (13.8) kV, 630–2000 A, breaking 20/25 kA, making 50/62.5 kA, breaking time 3 cycles, weight 130–140 kg. Control circuits are not modified, only an interlock plate is fitted on the compartment floor.
Type MV replaces the magnetic blow-out circuit breakers of the DHE and DHP series, discontinued in 1985 (spare parts in 2005). The MV-S version is rated for 3.6 and 7.2 kV (600–2000 A, 12.5–40 kA), the MV-L for 6.6–12 kV (1200–3000 A, 25–43.8 kA). Breaking time is 5 cycles. Power consumption is 20 % lower than with magnetic blow-out types.
Type GV (10-VPR-40D(GV)) takes the place of the SF6 circuit breakers 10-SFG-40 without any modification of the cubicle. It is rated 12 kV, 1250–3150 A (1000–2700 A at 50 °C), breaking 40 kA, making 104 kA, with a breaking time of 3 cycles. The device complies with IEC 62271-100-2012 with classes M2, E1 and C2, is naturally cooled and needs no fans on the panel. The version with an RC snubber is intended for power plants, the version without it for substations.
Compared with the SF6 device, the GV has a higher small-current breaking endurance, 10,000 versus 3000 operations. SF6 handling is eliminated and inspection labour is halved. SF6 pressure monitoring in the cubicle is no longer needed.
All retrofit circuit breakers have the BH-2 motor-spring operating mechanism, which needs no maintenance for 15 years and is also fitted on the latest vacuum circuit breakers of the manufacturer. The device is racked in or out with a single movement of a lever. Mechanical and electrical interlocking prevents racking a closed circuit breaker in or out and closing it in an intermediate position. When ordering, state the serial number of the existing device and of the switchgear.

Questions and answers
Which old circuit breakers can be replaced with retrofit ones?
VV replaces the vacuum 10-VPR-25M and 10-VPR-25B(B), MV the magnetic blow-out DHE and DHP, GV the SF6 10-SFG-40. The switchgear cubicles are not replaced.
Is cubicle modification needed for the GV?
No, the 10-VPR-40D(GV) takes the place of the 10-SFG-40 without cubicle modification. It is rated 12 kV, 1250–3150 A and 40 kA breaking.
Which standard does the GV comply with?
IEC 62271-100-2012, classes M2, E1 and C2. Endurance for small-current breaking is 10,000 operations.
