VK / HVK and HV6CS medium-voltage vacuum circuit breakers
VK, HVK and HV6CS are medium-voltage vacuum circuit breakers built on the manufacturer's own interrupters, developed since 1962. The VK/HVK series is intended for switchgear and motor control centres, and the compact HV6CS works in mobile power centres and mobile substations.

Description
The breakers provide centralized control and protection of medium-voltage equipment and circuits. The VK/HVK series covers a large number of combinations of rated voltages and breaking currents for use in different countries. The compact design uses axial magnetic field interrupters. Such interrupters spread the arc over the contact surface and reduce contact erosion when breaking high currents. The control circuits are built on printed circuit boards and placed on the front, which simplifies access during commissioning. HVK breakers are assembled in Houston (Texas) to ANSI standards, and the series integrates with JK medium-voltage starters.
HV6CS is designed for low-power medium-voltage incoming and distribution equipment. These are mobile power centres, mobile substations, and generator protection and synchronization. The interrupters have a low chopping current and low switching overvoltages, so no special protective devices are needed when starting motors and switching transformers, including external surge arresters for motors. Different mounting methods, connections and terminal box configurations simplify installation. The low weight and compact enclosure of HV6CS matter precisely for mobile installations where space and weight are limited.
Both series have small dimensions and weight, electrical and mechanical interlocks, high breaking capacity and reduced maintenance needs. The version is fixed or withdrawable, the operating mechanism manual or motor-operated. The interlocks prevent withdrawing the breaker under load or closing it in an intermediate position. The vacuum interrupter needs no topping up or replacement of the arc-quenching medium, as oil devices do, and this matters for remote mining and oil and gas sites. The breakers are installed in switchgear and motor control centres of 2.4–15 kV at industrial plants, power plants, mining and oil and gas sites, and on mobile substations.
The manufacturer develops its own interrupters and made its first vacuum interrupter in 1962. The breakers are built by the manufacturer's US company in Houston (USA), part of the Motors & Drives division of the group. The products are tested in in-house laboratories accredited to ISO 9001:2015, NVLAP and UL, and service centres operate in Houston and Edmonton. The same programme includes HCV vacuum contactors and JK MV starters, with which the breakers are assembled in switchgear.

Questions and answers
What voltages are the breakers designed for?
The breakers are used in switchgear and motor control centres of 2.4–15 kV. The HVK series complies with ANSI standards.
Are surge arresters needed with HV6CS breakers?
For motors external surge arresters are not needed, because the HV6CS interrupters have a low chopping current and low switching overvoltages. The same applies to switching transformers.
What breaker versions are available?
Fixed and withdrawable, with manual or motor-operated mechanism. The VK/HVK series integrates with JK MV starters.
