Description

UVC is a three-phase medium-voltage vacuum contactor for switching capacitor banks, electric motors and transformers in AC networks. Vacuum contactors are designed for a very large number of operations. For this reason they are chosen for automatic reactive power compensation installations, where the stages are switched on and off many times during the day, and for frequent starts of high-voltage motors. The contactors can be installed in multi-stack cubicles, which saves space in the switchgear.

Design. The contactor consists of several assemblies: a switching mechanism with vacuum interrupters, a magnetic actuator, a high-strength molded front cover and auxiliary devices. The actuator allows operation with either momentary (pulse) or continuous excitation, so the contactor can be used in various control schemes.

Characteristics. The rated operating voltage is 6.6 kV, the rated voltage of the device Ur is 7.2 kV, and the rated frequency is 50/60 Hz. The rated operating current is 400 A. The rated short-time withstand current is 3 kA for 30 s and 6.3 kA for 1 s. Mechanical endurance reaches 1,000,000 operations and electrical endurance 300,000 operations. Other powers, voltages and frequencies are made to order. In capacitor installations the stages are switched many times a day, so an electrical life of 300,000 operations matters for this duty. For motors, mechanical endurance is important because starts are repeated often.

Application. The contactor is used in automatic high-voltage capacitor installations (alongside SF6 contactors and circuit breakers, depending on the network voltage), for starting and controlling high-voltage induction motors of pumps, fans and compressors, and for switching transformers. The breaking and making capacity, control circuit voltages and dimensions are not given in the published data and are clarified with the manufacturer. Before selecting a contactor for a particular motor or bank, the rated operating current of 400 A and the short-time currents of 3 kA and 6.3 kA are compared with the calculated currents of the feeder, and the control circuit voltage is agreed with the manufacturer.
