Description
For railway equipment, separate fuses are produced for rolling stock, traction converters, infrastructure and signalling systems. Traction networks differ substantially from industrial ones. Long cable lines, contact wires and contact rails give high inductance, regeneration raises the voltage, and a large part of the European network operates at a frequency of 16⅔ Hz.
Therefore selecting a fuse-link only by rated current and voltage is not enough. The L/R time constants, the regeneration mode, the design short-circuit conditions and the requirements of IEC 60077-5 are taken into account. The rated voltage of the fuse-link is chosen with a margin above the contact line voltage, taking the breaking test voltage into account. For a 600 V network a 720 V fuse-link is taken (test 800 V), for 750 V a 900 V fuse-link (1000 V), for 1500 V an 1800 V fuse-link (1950 V), and for 3000 V a 3600 V fuse-link (3900 V).
Typical items of the range for traction and power circuits. 9020026 (SQB-DC2 / SM394) for 100–355 A, DC 4200 V, aR, 30 kA. 9021026 (SQB-DC2-2 / SM394) for 400–630 A, DC 4200 V, aR, 30 kA. 9020021 for 160–200 A, DC 4000 V, gR, 30 kA. 9020126 (SM246) for 100–400 A, DC 2400 V, aR, 30 kA. 9020326 and 9022326 for 100–400 A and 25–215 A, DC 1200 V, aR, 30 kA. 9009410 of size 36×190 mm for 2–100 A, DC 1500 V, gR, 30 kA. 9038821 (SQB-DC93-2) for 900–1400 A, DC 900 V, gR, 100 kA. 9031021 and 9036021 (SQB-DC91) for 160–250 A, DC 900 V, gR, 100 kA.
By field of application, the following fuse-links are offered. For infrastructure: HV-BU 10/24 kV, URS AC 690 V and NH AC 500 V. For current collection and main supply: URS DC 750/900 V. For traction and power electronics: URS DC 1200 V. For auxiliary systems and onboard power: URZ DC 1500 V, URZ-U ZS modules DC 1000 V, SBB DC 600/1000 V. For batteries and emergency power: URS/URM DC 1500 V. For signalling: GZKM and GSMB. The fuse-links are designed for shocks, vibration, temperature variations and a long service life. The manufacturer's experience with direct voltage up to 4000 V in traction is also used in developing solutions for 2000 V DC for renewables.

Questions and answers
Which fuse-link should be chosen for a 3000 V contact network?
For a 3000 V network a 3600 V fuse-link is taken, with a breaking test voltage of 3900 V. For a 1500 V network an 1800 V fuse-link (1950 V) is taken.
Why is selection only by current and voltage not enough for traction networks?
Long cable lines and contact wires give high inductance, and regeneration raises the voltage. Therefore the L/R time constants, the regeneration mode, the design short-circuit conditions and IEC 60077-5 are taken into account, and the frequency of part of the European network is 16⅔ Hz.
What breaking capacity do fuse-links for DC 4200 V and DC 900 V have?
Items for DC 4200 V, for example SQB-DC2 / SM394 for 100–355 A, have 30 kA (aR). Items for DC 900 V, for example SQB-DC93-2 for 900–1400 A, have 100 kA (gR).
