Description
The ModularCatenarySwitch (MCS) is a modular series of outdoor single-pole and two-pole devices for switching the catenary of AC railways on open line and in tunnels. The modular design makes it possible to produce one base device as a disconnector or as a load break switch, and to fit it with automatic earthing, auxiliary switches and other accessories.
The versions are MCS-ARC (disconnector with arcing horns), MCS-LBS (load break switch, also called switch-disconnector) and MCS-LBP (load break switch with a pre-arcing horn for increased making capacity). Options include automatic earthing, an auxiliary switch, a shaft extension, a rod end, a handle, a central drive crank on the left or right, and motor drives and rods on request.
The nominal network voltage is 15 kV (device rated voltage 17.25 kV, 16.7 Hz) and 25 kV (27.5 kV, 50 Hz). Rated current is 1250 or 2000 A for ARC and LBS and 2000 A for LBP. Short-time withstand current is 31.5 / 40 kA for 3 s (40 kA for LBP), peak current 80 / 100 kA. Short-circuit making capacity is 16 kA for LBS and 40 kA for LBP.
The breaking capacity of the ARC is 9 A at transformer no-load current and 6 A at cable charging current. For the LBS the rated breaking current is 1250 / 2000 A and the cable charging current 32 A, for the LBP 2000 A. The insulation withstands an impulse of 170 kV (15 kV) and 250 kV (25 kV), a one-minute test voltage of 70 and 95 kV, and the creepage distance is about 1150 and 1595 mm. Mechanical class 3, electrical class E1 (LBS, LBP), mass 31–42 kg.
The current-carrying circuit is silver-plated copper, and the other parts are made of corrosion-resistant materials. The devices comply with EN 50152-2 and IEC/EN 62505-2 and are mounted on portals or poles. They are used for catenary sectioning, for a visible break under load at section insulators, in tunnels, at stations and in depots of main-line and suburban railways.

Questions and answers
What catenary voltages are the MCS devices intended for?
For 15 kV networks (17.25 kV, 16.7 Hz) and 25 kV networks (27.5 kV, 50 Hz). The insulation withstands an impulse of 170 kV and 250 kV respectively.
How do the MCS-ARC, MCS-LBS and MCS-LBP versions differ?
The ARC is a disconnector with arcing horns, the LBS a load break switch. The LBP is also a load break switch, with a pre-arcing horn, and its short-circuit making capacity is 40 kA against 16 kA for the LBS.
What rated currents and standards do the MCS devices have?
Rated current is 1250 or 2000 A (ARC and LBS) and 2000 A (LBP). The devices comply with EN 50152-2 and IEC/EN 62505-2.
