INERTIA LineBOSS GBS and NBS — grounding load break switches 15–72.5 kV and regulator bypass disconnect switches 15–38 kV
LineBOSS GBS, a grounding load break switch, is produced for 15–72.5 kV, and LineBOSS NBS, a voltage regulator bypass disconnect switch, for the 15.5, 25.8 and 38 kV classes. The first interrupts load, gives a visible break and grounds the line, while the second takes the regulator out of service without disconnecting customers. They are installed at substations, sectionalizing points and on distribution lines.
- GBS: classes / current
- 15 kV 600 A; 25 kV 900 A; 35 kV 1200 A; also 48 and 72.5 kV
- GBS: functions

Description
LineBOSS GBS and NBS address two typical tasks in distribution networks and substations. The GBS interrupts load, creates a visible isolation gap and grounds the line at substations and at sectionalizing points on poles. The NBS bypasses a voltage regulator so that it can be taken out for maintenance without interrupting customers.
The GBS is supplied for a two-crossarm substation structure with bases adapted to existing structures, or as a unified unit on a single steel crossarm. A version with fuse disconnectors is available for additional protection. The operating mechanisms have key interlocks that prevent the disconnect (load break switch) and the ground switch from being closed at the same time by mistake. Ratings are 600 A for 15 kV, 900 A for 25 kV and 1200 A for 35 kV, and versions for 48 and 72.5 kV are also available. Standard configurations are the ground switch and the ground switch with fuses, and a selection guide is provided.
The NBS (Nielsen Bypass Switch) was developed in 1972 by engineer Carl Nielsen for bypassing without breaking current and for connecting and disconnecting booster transformers. The device keeps power supplied to the load side while single-phase, two-phase and three-phase booster, automatic booster and regulating transformers are switched in or out in response to voltage regulation modes, during planned maintenance or replacement. Classes are 15.5, 25.8 and 38 kV, with a momentary and continuous current of 600 A. There are two disconnection methods, Open Gap and bypass, and a spring mechanism performs the switching. A limiting resistor reduces the circulating current in the regulator winding, even when it sits off neutral.
Both devices are built on the proven LineBOSS designs: steel phase bases, stainless steel and brass bearings and silver-plated copper contacts. The units are supplied assembled, adjusted at the factory and ready for installation on one or two crossarms, with hot-stick or push-rod operation. For improved corrosion resistance, black components with an ArmorGalv® coating are available. The documentation covers a selection guide, standard configurations, installation methods, single-phase installation and connection diagrams for delta and wye connections.

Questions and answers
What currents and voltages does the GBS have?
For 15 kV the rating is 600 A, for 25 kV 900 A and for 35 kV 1200 A. Versions for 48 and 72.5 kV are also available.
What is the NBS used for?
It bypasses a voltage regulator and puts it into or out of service without interrupting power to the load side. Classes are 15.5, 25.8 and 38 kV, with a momentary and continuous current of 600 A.
How does the GBS prevent incorrect operations?
Key interlocks stop the disconnect and the ground switch from being closed at the same time. The device also provides a visible isolation gap.
