Description
Lightning is metal-enclosed DC switchgear for railway, metro and tram traction substations. It draws on the manufacturer's more than 50 years of experience in the design and manufacture of DC circuit breakers. The basis of the cubicle is the NDC high-speed circuit breaker with an award-winning magnetic actuator. A solenoid with a plunger drives the main contacts to close and returns the latch after opening.
In the NDC breaker, a patented arc transfer system prevents contamination of the breaker compartment and cubicle with combustion products. The breaker is high-speed and unidirectional, and its main parts are the magnetic actuator with a magnetic latch, robust contacts, an arc chute and blow-out coils. The cold cathode arc chute dissipates all arcs. The transfer coil creates additional magnetic flux in the contact gap and helps to interrupt small currents that would otherwise cause prolonged arcing. The design was aimed from the start at easy maintenance, and operators note minimal need for intervention.
Rated voltage 750–1500 V DC (design voltage 900–1800 V), rated operating current 4000, 6000 or 8000 A. Rated short-circuit current 180 kA peak / 125 kA – 142 kA peak / 100 kA, short-time withstand 100 kA peak / 71 kA for 250 ms. Track time constant 100 ms, critical current in bidirectional operation 25–26 A. Mechanical endurance 50,000 operations. Power frequency test voltage 9 kV, impulse 20 kV, overvoltage category OV4, control supply 50 V DC (other options are possible).
The SafeBond unit was developed on the basis of Lightning, and PowerBond was created for new networks. Together with rectifier transformers, this makes it possible to assemble DC traction substations. About 300 panels have been supplied to Network Rail since 2014 and operate in the British railway network.
Applications include railway, metro and tram traction substations, industrial transport, and industrial DC systems. The switchgear is manufactured in Blackwood (South Wales). The patented magnetic actuator based on a solenoid with permanent magnet latching requires no maintenance.
