Description
The manufacturer classes the HS vacuum circuit breakers as a standard series for medium-voltage switchgear with relatively high breaking currents. They are made for all rated voltages from 3.6 to 36 kV, and the rated breaking current is from 12.5 to 50 kA. The general description of the series gives the upper limit as 63 kA, so the rating of a specific type is checked against the table of versions. According to the manufacturer, the series is designed for various special industrial requirements.
The series is aimed at networks with a voltage above 7.2 kV and short-circuit currents above 20 kA. These are incomers and outgoing feeders of main switchgear at power plants, substations and large industrial enterprises. For lower short-circuit currents, the same range has more compact series, for example Multi VCB for 3.6/7.2 kV. HS devices can be used in various types of 6–35 kV switchgear.
The interrupters switch the current reliably across the whole range, up to the rated short-circuit current. The special-alloy contacts need no maintenance over a long service life. The interrupter has a contact wear indicator that shows when it must be replaced, so replacement is planned by actual condition and not by the calendar.
The motor-spring operating mechanism (version M) stores energy in a spring and performs fast automatic reclosing, so the breaker suits lines with auto-reclosing. After each closing, the motor recharges the spring and the mechanism is ready for the next cycle without operator involvement. The position indicator, operations counter, manual trip button and manual closing device are placed on a control panel with a protected front. The panel is insulated from the high-voltage part, which improves safety during operation and inspections.
The breakers are made in fixed version P and in withdrawable truck-mounted types X and Y. The withdrawable variants simplify switchgear layout, and the device can be rolled out for inspection. The series complies with the Japanese JEC standards and international IEC. To select a replacement in an existing cubicle, the rated voltage, breaking current, version type and the control circuit voltage of the mechanism are needed. Overall dimensions and the decoding of the type designation are given in the series catalog.

Questions and answers
What voltages and breaking currents are HS breakers made for?
The series covers rated voltages from 3.6 to 36 kV and breaking currents from 12.5 to 50 kA. The general series description mentions up to 63 kA, so the rating of a specific type is checked against the table.
Which sites is the HS series suitable for?
For main switchgear of power plants, substations and large industrial enterprises with a voltage above 7.2 kV and short-circuit currents above 20 kA. The breakers are installed in 6–35 kV switchgear.
What versions and mechanism does the HS breaker have?
Fixed version P and truck-mounted withdrawable versions X and Y. The motor-spring mechanism M supports fast automatic reclosing.
