STA / EMPA / SSK — high-voltage fuses 6–40.5 kV
STA, EMPA and SSK are high-voltage current-limiting fuses of high breaking capacity for indoor switchgear and outdoor switchgear. The fuse links protect transformers, cables, capacitors and switching devices. Rated voltages are from 6/12 to 20/36 kV, currents up to 160 A, rated breaking current I1 up to 63 kA.

Description
High-voltage high breaking capacity (H.v.h.b.c.) fuses are intended for indoor air-insulated and gas-insulated switchgear and for outdoor switchgear, including in difficult climatic conditions. The fuse links protect distribution and power transformers, cables, capacitors and switching devices. They are used in load-break switch and fuse combinations of secondary substations. In the overview catalogue, the program covers 7.2, 12, 24, 36 and 40.5 kV at currents up to 160 A and includes versions for indoor and outdoor installation and for SF6 switchgear.
The STA series (part numbers 797…) has an 80 N striker with built-in thermal protection. Rated voltages are 6/12, 10/24 and 20/36 kV, currents 2–160 A, for 20/36 kV 2–100 A, including the versions 80RC63 and 100RC71. The rated breaking current I1 is 63 kA (40 kA at 20/36 kV), the minimum breaking current I3 is 16–600 A. EMPA (part numbers 798…) also has an 80 N striker with thermal protection, is rated for 12 and 24 kV, currents 2.5–100 A for 12 kV and 2.5–125 A for 24 kV, I1 50 kA, I3 8–595 A. SSK (797 19…/797 29…) is intended for combinations with load-break switches and for transformers above 630 kVA, at 6/12 and 10/24 kV, currents 63, 80, 100 and 125 A, I1 63 kA, I3 210–450 A. Fuse links with a 120 N striker without thermal protection are also made.
Dimensions to DIN 43625: length e is 292 mm (6/12 kV), 442 mm (10/24 kV) and 537 mm (20/36 kV). The weight of the fuse links is 1.6–5.7 kg, power losses 8–320 W depending on the rating.
The striker operates when the element melts or the thermal protection operates, and acts mechanically on the load-break switch mechanism or a remote signalling device. Thermal protection, standard for fuse links with an 80 N striker, releases the striker and trips the load-break switch before the porcelain tube heats to a dangerous temperature. This is needed in case of incorrect rating selection or faults on the LV side of the transformer. Test cartridges of 70 and 100 N are offered for checking.
The program complies with IEC 60282-1, IEC 60644, IEC 60549, DIN 43625 and EN 62271-105. Fuse links for transformers are selected according to VDE 0670 part 402.
