Description

High-speed circuit breakers and line contactors (unit switch) are installed in the power circuit of DC electric multiple units and trams. Both devices make and break the main circuit and protect it. They are located in the supply path from the current collector (pantograph) to the VVVF traction inverter. In the event of a fault current caused, for example, by an equipment failure, the high-speed circuit breaker quickly separates the car circuits from the catenary and protects the traction converter.

The devices are distinguished by high breaking capacity and quiet operation. An electromagnetic shielding system prevents arcing outside the arc chute. The enclosure is insulated with fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP), so choosing the installation place is easier. The breakers are interchangeable with existing high-speed circuit breakers and comply with the international standard IEC 60077-3 for DC circuit breakers for rolling stock.

The high-speed circuit breaker is built for rated voltages of 1500 V and 750/600 V DC and rated continuous currents of 1000 A and 800 A. The control circuit voltage is 110, 100 or 24 V DC. The breaking capacity is 1800 V DC and 10 kA at a circuit inductance of 1–20 mH. Auxiliary contacts 3a3b. The mass with the suspension frame is 76 kg for the 1000 A version and 75 kg for 800 A.

The line contactor (unit switch) is rated for the same voltages of 1500 and 750/600 V and a rated continuous current of 800 A DC. The control voltage is 110, 100, 36 or 24 V DC, auxiliary contacts 3a3b. The total mass is 15.1 kg, of which 9.9 kg is the device and 5.2 kg is the arc chute. High-speed circuit breakers are also part of roof-mounted traction inverters of trams, together with line contactors, a filter reactor and a braking chopper.

For Ukrainian rolling stock these devices have the same purpose as the high-speed circuit breakers and line contactors of electric multiple units, metros and trams at 600–1500 V. For 3 kV networks, applicability must be confirmed with the manufacturer.
