Description
HH fuses with ICS® technology (Increased Cyclic Stability) are a series of high-voltage current-limiting fuses for networks with variable load. Decentralised generation (wind, solar and hydro power plants), high-power energy storage and charging stations create constant load cycles in the network. In ordinary HH fuse-links such cycles lead to premature fatigue of the fuse element material. Maintenance intervals shorten, and a fuse-link can fail suddenly. The reason is that the number of local connection points and of power take-off from renewable sources is growing quickly, and the load in the network varies strongly.
ICS fuse-links have a fuse element of special structure that automatically compensates even strongly varying thermal loads. According to the manufacturer, the resistance to cyclic switching in ICS is more than 40 times higher than in traditional fuse-links. This corresponds to the increased stability recommended by IEC/TR 62655 (guidance on the application of high-voltage fuses). All the properties of current-limiting HH fuse-links are retained, including interruption of the short-circuit current in the first half-cycle, quartz filling, and a striker for tripping the load-break switch.
ICS fuses are produced for rated voltages from 6/12 kV and rated currents from 63 A. The rating plate of SSK/ICS fuse-links shows the class, place of manufacture, rated breaking currents I1 and I3, striker force, rated current and voltage, and the version by environmental conditions. In dimensions the fuse-links are compatible with standard DIN fuse-links (DIN 43625). They are manufactured in Germany. ICS fuse-links are designed for demanding cyclic load currents, at which they retain functionality and durability.
The operational effect is longer inspection intervals, longer service life, lower maintenance costs and protection against system failures. They are used on transformers of wind power installations and collector substations of wind farms, at solar power plants, for connecting energy storage (BESS) and high-power charging stations, and at distribution network substations with a high share of renewable sources.
The rating is chosen in the same way as for standard HH fuse-links: by transformer power and voltage, inrush current and selectivity requirements with the LV protection. If one fuse-link has operated in a three-phase circuit, it is recommended to replace all three.
