Description
The vacuum contactors control and protect MV motors, transformers and capacitor banks in industry, and the compact enclosures suit both new cubicles and retrofit. The newest model HCV-7HA(L) complies with UL 347 (6th edition). It develops the HCV-5HA and has improved vacuum interrupters for higher electrical safety. HCV-6KA(L)U received a solid-state control unit for 100–240 V AC or DC that does not require a coil change, and a patented axial magnetic field electrode that interrupts high currents in smaller dimensions. HCV-5HA(L) became the first vacuum contactor with an electronic drive without economizer resistors, and it is often installed in place of obsolete air contactors and breakers.
CV-10 replaces vacuum circuit breakers in many circuits. The device is smaller and cheaper, and its service life is more than 10 times longer than that of medium-voltage breakers. The HV version switches capacitors, HA works with motors and transformers. For LV networks the HCV-1JBU/1KAU rated 720 A is intended, and it needs no parallel interrupters per phase, because the same axial magnetic field electrode interrupts the high current.
The arc is extinguished inside the vacuum interrupter, so the contactors can be installed in dusty rooms. The contacts need almost no maintenance. The contact material minimizes chopping current, and surge arresters are needed only in special cases. MV models are made electrically held or with a mechanical latch, which keeps the contacts closed even without coil power. The high- and low-voltage sections are separated by a non-combustible insulating barrier. The electronic drive is powered from 100–240 V AC or 100–250 V DC and lowers energy consumption. The compact enclosure and withdrawable version simplify replacing old devices in existing cubicles.
The contactors comply with UL, CSA, AS, BS, NEMA and IEC 60470 standards, and compliance of individual series should be confirmed with the manufacturer. Typical applications include MV motor starters, switching of transformers and capacitor banks, OEM supply for switchgear and control cabinets, and modernization of old starters. The manufacturer, a Houston (USA) company, belongs to the Motors & Drives division of its group. The devices are tested in in-house laboratories accredited to ISO 9001:2015, NVLAP and UL, and service centres operate in Houston and Edmonton.

Questions and answers
What control voltage do HCV contactors need?
The electronic control unit works from 100–240 V AC or 100–250 V DC. For HCV-6KA(L)U the manufacturer specifies 100–240 V AC or DC without a coil change.
Which model should be chosen for switching capacitor banks?
CV-10 in the HV version. The HA version is intended for motors and transformers, and the service life of CV-10 is more than 10 times longer than that of MV breakers.
What standards do the contactors comply with?
UL, CSA, AS, BS, NEMA and IEC 60470. The HCV-7HA(L) model complies with UL 347 (6th edition).
