Description
Fusesaver is a compact vacuum circuit breaker for medium-voltage overhead distribution networks, which according to the manufacturer is the fastest in the world in this class. Faults on taps, i.e. side branches of overhead lines, are among the main causes of customer outages and repair crew call-outs. Most often they are temporary, such as conductor clashing, contact with branches or birds.
The device clears such a fault within half a cycle, 10 ms, before the tap fuse blows, and then recloses the line. A short-lived fault does not lead to a prolonged power interruption. A short arc reduces the fault energy, the stress on network equipment and the probability of ignition. Multi-phase tripping is supported for both temporary and permanent short circuits.
Fusesaver is installed on an overhead line pole. It is light and compact, quick to install, including in remote locations, and is powered by the line current itself without an external source. One platform works in several modes: fuse saving, reclosing (recloser), sectionalizing and switching. The mode is set according to the device's role in the network, so the equipment fleet can be standardized.
SCADA integration and remote engineering access for configuration, monitoring and data download without a site visit are available as options. In fire-prone areas, for example in Australia, the dispatcher can remotely disable auto-reclosing on days of extreme fire danger. Rated voltages and currents are not given in the manufacturer's materials and are clarified from the catalog. Applications include taps and branches of 6–35 kV overhead lines of distribution companies, rural networks, and areas with high fire danger.

Questions and answers
How fast does the Fusesaver clear a fault on a tap?
Within half a cycle, i.e. 10 ms, before the tap fuse blows. After that the line is reclosed.
Does the Fusesaver need an external power supply?
No. The device is powered by the line current itself, so it can be installed on an overhead line pole even in remote locations.
Which operating modes does the Fusesaver have?
Fuse saving, reclosing (recloser), sectionalizing and switching. The mode is set according to the device's role in the 6–35 kV overhead network.
