Description

High-speed DC circuit breakers HSCB (High-Speed Circuit Breaker) of the EDB-09 and EDB-18 series control traction power supply feeders and interrupt fault currents. The EDB-09 for a rated voltage of 750 V DC (maximum 900 V) is used in light rail transport, and the EDB-18 for 1500 V DC (maximum 1800 V) in metros and on main-line railways. The company calls itself the first HSCB manufacturer under the IEC standard, and in 2001 the breaker received a Korean technology award.

Opening is electrical, and holding is electrical or by a permanent magnet actuator PMA. This scheme noticeably simplifies the design, reduces the number of failures and eases maintenance even with frequent switching and heavy loads. The current-carrying parts are made of high-conductivity materials, so resistance and heating in normal operation are low, and the temperature does not exceed 85 °C. Contacts made of a special alloy neither melt nor weld when interrupting a short circuit. High insulation capability protects personnel.

Rated currents are 3000, 4000 and 6000 A. Short-circuit switching capacity according to the manufacturer's table is 76.8 and 178 kA. Insulation test voltage is 11 kV AC between phases and 9.2 kV to earth, and 2 kV for control circuits. Rated breaking overvoltage is from 1.5 to 2.5 Ue. The operating cycle O-15 s-CO-15 s-CO-60 s-CO has been verified for maximum current, maximum energy and remote short circuit. The overcurrent release setting is chosen in the range 2–8 or 6–12 kA, and the control supply is 110 / 220 V DC. With the PMA mechanism, endurance is at least 40 000 operations.

The breaker works as a pair with the protection relay ETCPU200, which the company created specifically for this apparatus. Together they interrupt currents from zero to the rated breaking current. Type tests were carried out in the accredited laboratories KERI and IPH (CESI) under IEC 61992. The HSCB is installed on catenary feeders and rectifier unit inputs of traction substations of metros, trams, light metro and DC railways. It is also the main switching device of the DC switchgear ETGR21/22, where it stands on a withdrawable truck.

Questions and answers

Which model should be chosen for a tram and which for a metro?

The EDB-09 is intended for light rail transport with 750 V DC. For metros and railways at 1500 V DC the EDB-18 with a maximum voltage of 1800 V is used.

Which rated currents are available?

The breakers are made for 3000, 4000 and 6000 A. The overcurrent release setting is 2–8 or 6–12 kA.

Under which standard was the HSCB tested?

Type tests were carried out in the KERI and IPH laboratories under IEC 61992. Endurance with the PMA mechanism is at least 40 000 operations.
